Is this supplement meant to be written creatively? Or rather straightforwardly?
Finding a balance would of course be the best but I want to make which direction to head.
Similarly, should I start with an anecdote or go straight into NYU’s advantages?
I was accepted ED1 and my supplement was written in four parts. Well, really three and a two-sentence conclusion.
- Anecdote (the first time I had an experience relevant to my major)
- Academic advantages (why I chose to apply to NYU for my major, including names of professors)
- Social advantages (location, historical context, tied it into my major)
- Statement of preference (NYU is the school for me, period.)
That being said, a straightforward answer could be just as effective as a creative essay. I’d go so far as to say it might be more effective, depending on the strength of your prose. I’d be happy to let you read my essay in full if you’d like, though it’s hyper specific and may or may not really help.
@Rougarou Wow, thank you so much! Your order is actually the exact same as mine for all of my other schools’ supplements Could you please send me your essay, if that won’t be a problem? Again, thank you!
Of course! I’ll send you a PM in just a second.
I was accepted ED1 and mine was pretty straightforward.
My first paragraph was a simple introduction. This is where I want to go, this is the major I’ve selected, and why I think it’s fit for me.
Now, in both my second and my third paragraph, I related one extracurricular to an aspect of the programs of the major to which I was applying.
In my last paragraph, I made a brief, three-sentence conclusion about how my visit to NYU compelled me to apply, and how it convinced me that NYU was where I belonged. If you want to see it, just PM me.
Hi, guys, I am 2016 fall semester transfer applicant. I am right now working on the WHY NYU essay. I plan to mostly include the anecdote of my trip to nyu and nyc, realizing that NYU and NYC are best fit for me. However, I saw you all have included the part in which you tell your majors and why nyu will be best for your study of the major. Is that the most essential part for this essay and should be most stressed?
@CooperJuniorI especially if you’re applying as a transfer, I would suggest stressing your choice of major. Right now, it sounds to me like you’re writing an essay about why you want to move to New York. Location is a fine detail to touch on, but why have you chosen NYU’s program for your major? What about the program at NYU gives you better opportunities to succeed in your chosen field than you have at your current school?
Thx, good advice. I firstly thought that my anecdote would be personal and let the admission officer know me individual and set me apart from other applicants. However, I just wonder that since I am currently studying Econ and Math in UCSD and the Econ program there pretty much has the same academic ranking as that in NYU, so if I say so much that nyu is so much better than my current, it may be so inauthentic and even a little bit ass-kissing. The only authentic reason why I want to go to NYU is that I love the campus vibe and the city. So I just so confused about how can it combine the major and school stuff together and pull it off. BTW, may I see your essay. I see you have already accepted and we are totally in different applicant pool.

@CooperJuniorI if you’d still like to see the essay I submitted, I’d be happy to send it to you. I think, given your circumstances, your essay will probably be fine. I’d be happy to read it over for you if you’d like.
@Rougarou hello
@Fotech Hi! Anything I can help with?
@Rougarou yes please! I am applying to transfer to NYU, and would like to know if I can glance at your “why NYU” paper for inspiration! I’m not a typical Ivy League bound, nor top tier college bound student so I’m not too sure what the standards for a personal statement or supplemental paper are; given that you are a current student I would appreciate any help and advice on these papers!
Hi! I am applying to NYU now and currently working on the same essay question. Not too sure if mine is on the right travk so wondering if I could see yours to get an idea of if mine is good. Thanks!
Hey I am applying to NYU, and I’m in the process of writing my “Why NYU” essay, and I just wanted to see how other’s wrote.
I’m writing my Why NYU essay right now too. I’m applying to transfer for fall 2017 and I’m kind of wondering about how everyone balances the common app essay and the why nyu essay? I kind of want to write my why nyu essay about why i want to go to nyu in general, told mostly through an anecdote. I don’t really touch on my major at all in my why nyu essay, because in my common app essay I talk almost entirely about how I want to transfer to NYU for a specific program that my current university does not offer me (i’m only applying to nyu, so writing about nyu in my common app essay is fine). I was just wondering what everyone’s thoughts on this are? I think almost everything I’ve seen people have said to write really specifically about your major in your why nyu essay but since I can kind of talk about that in my common app essay too, I thought it might be okay? I wrote more kind of about how NYU’s vibe/philosophy is perfect for me in my why nyu essay, and about my major in my common app essay. Thoughts/any advice or help is hugely appreciated!
hellp
can you pm your essay as well?
can you help me and can i see your essay?
@Rougarou hey i got wait-listed for NYU and I have to write another why nyu essay and I was wondering if i could see how you did yours for some inspiration.
I know this is so late but I’m applying for Tisch and I have been starting my essay process. if it’s not too much of a bother could you send me your essay?
