Why only 10%?

In the FAQs for the deffered people, it says that only 10% of the people defferred were accepted in the spring. That's stupid. We are the ones that want to go to your college more than anyone, so why such a low percentage? Anyone have any view on this?

i know what you mean i was also deferred, but Penn defers 30% of the early decision pool. I guess that’s why they only accept 10%

Yea but what is bad is in the defer pool everyone is smart, which is horrible, because 10% is way too less. Majority of the people will have great scores and ECs so it’s so subjective. In ED pool atleast there were a portion of people who were not fit at all, thats why now with deferred I’m not getting my hopes up

I honestly was surprised I was even deferred. I have a C on my transcript that I have yet to change and a 27 ACT score with 600 Math LVL 2 and 710 Spanish. I am soo surprised I didn’t get rejected.

^^how many kids at Penn are from Oregon? may want to retake ACT before RD decisions come out; you still have a shot with geographic bump

do you think you would have time to take the january SAT’s and send them in before they decide? i had an 1810 and thats probably why i got deferred.

Not too many apply. None from my school ( people thought U Penn was a public school… idiots). I was gonna take it today, but there was like an ice snow storm here and the ACTs were postponed so I’m taking them next weekend. Hopefully I can get a 29+. How much would this help me?

Hahahahahaha yesssss!!! I love this name. (This is hopeful2b_yank3e, btw)

VASSAP!

well obviously if you get a higher score it could only help you out

Yeah that’s true, maybe i’d get in… wouldn’t that just be the best?

There are different reasons for deferring. The school would genuinely like to accept some of the deferred and others are deferred because of factors including legacy, being from schools the U wants to attract more applicants from, powerful alumni wrote letters for them, etc…

LOL Bruno…

The screaming dick was the best part of that movie.

i was deferred as well and right now, i am wondering the same thing. it’s also very low probably because plenty of kids who want HYPSM apply to penn as a back up, and they end up more qualified than those deferred.

ugh. this is disheartening

haha yeah, i’m bruno and yankee. fun.

anyway, i dunno why i would be deffered. maybe because i’m a hispanic student?

where can i find the state demographics of u penn?

[Penn Admissions: Incoming Class Profile](http://www.admissions.upenn.edu/profile/)

Incoming Class profile. That give you my year at least. One of those thirteen is a good friend of mine :)

See? Only 13 kids. That’s nothing!

Your friend isn’t from Eugene is he/she? haha

hopeful2b_yank3e - are you an athlete? Outstanding extracurricular activities? You must have something.

i’m not an athlete, i was actually thinking about contacting the coach but i think it’s too late, but i have pretty good ecs. check out an old post:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/789120-ive-been-told-im-good-minus-scores.html

just google it. . .I only know that NE, OK, and KS all send under 10 kids a year. Back to the original question, when talking to a penn addmissions officer she said that you get about an instant 12-15% edge when applying ED; so, when you switch to RD you lose this edge and you’re also competing with kids who will ultimately go to HYP but are using Penn as a back up. In short, you lose a major selling point and the competition becomes tougher. . .but that’s just my guess
