Is there anything as being a desperate to get into Penn? While I sure do want to go to Penn, it’s not the end of my life if I don’t, so I don’t want to sound the very pleady types. How do adcoms look upon “desperate” Why Penn essays?

Also, I’ve stayed clear of the usual features everybody flocks to: city campus, Ivy League blah blah since I thought that adcoms probably get bored of reading thousands of those essays. As of now, I have 281 words for Why Wharton, with the remaining being used for why I want to study business. Is this likely to be seen as an expression of lesser interest?

well...wharton is part of penn(not the other way around)! so i think u should focus more on why Penn rather than why Wharton...tho, citing the fact that you are interested in business is important! my point is dont overemphasize...

You need to have a solid reason. I got a great focus for the why Penn essay, which is different than the standard B.S. It incorporates everything, research, use of faciltities, my personal statement. Lol, have a unifying theme!

yeah, unifying themes are good. I connected every part of my app. I linked my political interest in both essays, both short answers, and in the activities

If your whole focus is on Wharton that will just **** them off, as if the rest of the university doesn't mean anything when it is really the main thing.

Whartonalum....in short: I spoke about Leadership, All-roundedness and Diversity in specific, while just touching on other points. The latter two I spoke of Penn, but leadership I spoke of more as a Wharton-centric point.
Only thing is....perhaps I said Wharton more than I said Penn...is that still bad?

i actually talked more to the mix of the university, even tho i was applying to seas... and my why penn answer really has nothing to do with my academic interests... lol, in fact, i don't even partake in my why penn activity

I wrote my Why Penn essay, it was my best piece of writing. Everyone else told me it sucked...but I knew it didn't. Now I'm completely destroying it. After reading it for the 10th time, I finally admited that it sounded like the Upenn magazine. It was BORING!

haha. my why penn essay was really desperate so i had to tone it down. i guess they don't want you to sound like you're begging to be accepted. i'm pretty sure that's how i came off though. oooh well.

for wharton applicants, how important is it to stress the why business part? interests are very personal. i like business cause i like business. it's not some kind of higher calling, or the result of a personal quest for self meaning. i just like it.
