Why Pepperdine-there seems to be little interest

Thought I would start a new thread. Pepperdine is very selective taking only a very few. Yet it is the only school of the dozens I have seen that offer a tour but not even a group admissions presentation and virtually no contact with applicants. Is it the beautiful campus and the religious aspect of the school that are of interest? Not only that but they send out their acceptances later than most. I guess, based on their prior experience they know they will fill the clas but something seems to be missing here--or am I missing something. Even the message Board here is totally lackluster and no one seems to be really cheerleading for this school. Strange. Thoughts? Anyone out there?

Hmmm...yeah. I definitely have my reservations about the school...especially since I love USC so much...I wonder if Pepperdine is too religious and not FUN enough. Also, when I visited campus (it was in the summer so that kind of put a damper on things) it seemed kind of dull and no one seemed really outgoing...also, my tour guide said that the campus kind of shuts down around 10:00 at night...uhh...I thought this was college...for me, that is kind of a problem (but the campus IS GORGEOUS! that much is certain)

Just because someone is religious does not mean they are not fun. I happen to like the fact that if I have the chance to go to Pepperdine next year, I will have the opportunity to become involved in some of the many exciting campus ministries that flood the campus, and also to meet some awesome people through these different organizations.

If you read thoroughly you will see that I didn't say it wasn't fun BECAUSE it is religious. Fun and religion were talked about as separate entities. What really made the campus not seem fun, was that it shut down around 10 at night...which is way early when you talk about college life (even the library closed then!).

I don't think it is the campus that shuts down at 10; I have read somewhere about complaints that the town of Malibu mostly shuts down at 10.

The town of Malibu is very laid back. Most students go into Santa Monica or UCLA for entertainment. There are lots of things going on during the week on campus, but it is pretty quiet on the weekends unless you belong to a fraternity or sorority, then there's more to do.

As for the religion part, you can make what you want of it. If you want to really get involved in your spiritual life, there is plenty there for you, but there are many students who aren't "religious" and still enjoy the other things Pepperdine has to offer. Their overseas program is the best! Over 50% of the students take either a sememster or year to go overseas.

My D visited, and loved the students she met. . The students there that she met were like her high school friends, normal , nice and down to earth. She did not meet sorority girls however so cannot comment on that aspect. She liked the dorms a lot and the friendships that spring up around the suite model. Students she met loved it there and were very happy with classes, professors and their social life. It is a dry campus but it seems that students do their partying, at other schools and stay over. Therefore drinking is not as prevalent as at other colleges. The students still do a lot on campus and in LA. The only down point is not having a friend with a car. Sophomore year is the year students go abroad. The college is very willing to meet with prospective students personally rather then group sessions for questions and they do have general days to vist but they tend to be crowded. I did not meet many unhappy students there, most are thrilled with their experience!

What i want to know is: according to Colleg Board, Pepperdine accepts only 29% - fairly selective, no? - yet the the mid-50% of SAT is 1110-1310, and ACT is 24-29. Awfully low. Most all other schools with those scores have much higher acceptance rates, while schools with those acceptance rates have much lower scores.
So, does Pepperdine just not get applicants w/ higher scores?
I don't understand. Any thoughts?

I have ponedered this question a great deal also with no success. I am totally guessing here but I do not think the reason the scores on the
SATs are lower than you would expect is because they do not have applicants that score high. Again, just guessing I am hoping that this is one of the very rare schools that truly walks the walk and looks at the overall picture --choosing those students who really have something more than just the raw horsepower to get good SAT scores. If so, then Pepperdine is to be given the highest congratulations for not adopting the herd mentality. I have to think that this school could play games with the SATs and raise its standing with US News by simply taking all the high SATs --but it seems they do not do this. That was sort of what I concluded and why I think this school could be a unique institution that really offers a great alternative to other schools. Anyone else???

Pepperdine looks at a WHOLE LOT MORE THAN SAT SCORES. Church related activities are pretty important to have. Thats what is great about Pepperdine for me...It is a great school academically speaking, and at the same time, the majority of people that go there are Christian and share most of the same beliefs as myself.

Another reason for the low acceptance rate/lower SAT scores is that they have to accept most (if not all) the Church of Christ kids who apply regardless of their test scores. That tends to lower their averages. Pepperdine is affiliated with the Church of Christ.

Pepperdine is in fact affiliated with the Church of Christ, but your assumption of having to "accept most (if not all) the Church of Christ kids who apply regardless of their test scores" is very, very false.

Those CB numbers are dated. According to my tour guide, the average SAT last year (accepted or attending, can't remember) was 1290.

the school def is CHURCH of CHRIST totally religious and if this is what you want in the most beautiful place in the world go for it! But you better be a religious type or you will be totally miserable! And the town closes at 10 for sure. I am going to Vanderbilt but I wanted to go to Pepperdine until I found out about the religious part and then I sort of backed off. Good luck everybody. Too bad Pepperdine doesnt loosen up and get to do some serious partying it would be a better place.

I think Pepperdine is very focused on the specific 'religious' type of student.

Hi-I wanted to see if anyone had any updates on this topic? Particularly around the religious aspect of Pepperdine as it relates to admission. My D visited over holiday weekend, met nice students, and got stoked about the large group of Fullbright Scholars.

The question is, how religious and involved in her church does she have to be in order to get in? Does the Church of Christ affiliation still prevail? We met a teacher who asked if she “was a woman of faith”, which took her aback, since no other school put that on the table.

She really likes everything about this school, but is not sure how active she has to be in her religion for it to weigh in acceptance.

Vegasmom23 I am indian and have no christian affiliation and i got in so i don’t think that matters. and my gpa was a 3.3 unweighted (3.6 weighted) and 30 ACT score. pepperdine looks at a WHOLE lot more than grades. I am a screenwriter and got recommendations from an emmy-winning producer and wrote a lot about my experience in the feature film industry which is prolly why i got in

I’m currently a freshman at Pepperdine, Christian but not Church of Christ. My roommate and a couple suitemates are CoC affiliated, and they all received some form of scholarship for it. In general, though, there seems to be a fairly even mix of religious and non-religious students. Admissions places a lot of emphasis on extracurriculars; they want students who will get involved at their school. Christian EC’s are ideal, but they’re flexible. It’s definitely worth applying!

there was my school district college fair a couple days ago, and the pepperdine rep said the average gpa was a 3.9(what?), and the average sat was like high 1900’s, is this true, because i dont think it is, but if it is im screwed with my 3.49
