I just wrote the second version of my "Why Rice" essay (the first was meant to be funny -- "you need some self-esteem. you are a great institution, rice, because you have the same school colors as my high school and because I like to make jokes about your name").

Can someone read it (the one I just wrote, not the funny one)? I'll PM it, and attach some general questions.

I think the focus of the essay is more what you will add to the Rice community than a typical "why Rice" approach. What's special about you -- your interests, your background, your approach, your culture, etc.

Hey, if your sense of humor finds its way into your writing, don't be afraid to show it in your Rice (or other college) essays (as long as it's not lewd or potentially offensive...mildly politically incorrect should be OK). I happen to think that Rice looks at more than test scores and transcripts - it's better to show that you have a vivid personality than to be detached and not convey anything in your essays except a grocery list of accomplishments.

I believe that is a separate short answer question on the application.

Oh, so this is in reference to the short answer question of "What motivated you to apply to Rice" instead of the "What will you bring essay?" Sorry -- I didn't get that from the question.

hi, id like to read it too although i might not be able to give any insight, (im going into grade 11)
i sorta just wanna see what a college essay looks like :)
