i'm considering rice but since it doesn't get much publicity (even though it's near the caliber of the country's top schools), i barely know anything about it. students and alums??? how would you summarize the school and the people??

There have been a lot of topics about this so I would reccommend searching back.

But anyway, without knowing what you are looking for this is harder.

I'm a Rice student and I absolutely love it here. One of the reasons that attracted me to it was the residential college system(think like Hogwarts). That gives Rice a very unique and fantastic social community.

The academics speak for themselves. If you are considering engineering then obviously Rice is phenomenal in that, but they are generally pretty strong across the board. The school is very undergraduate focused, which was another big selling point for me.

what about the strength of the name of the school? do people get internships \ job offerings nationally?

dimnar-- acutally i am probably going into engineering, which is why my college counselor suggested rice. however my mom thought that maybe since it is in the south there are issues like sexism and whatnot. personally i doubt she's right, because to me it just seems like she's a northerner stereotyping the south. still, are the people intense?? laid back?? preppy?? are sports popular?? i guess i'm just trying to figure out how rice is different from other schools

Read some old posts by Jenskate. She provides a good picture of Rice. Rice is not "southern' like Vanderbilt or schools like that. Very casual, laid back, and kids are very nice and friendly.

Sports are not particularly popular, although they are Div 1. They do have a very good baseball team. About half the students are from out of state, but remember Texas is a huge and diverse state. From the schools I've visited (UT-Austin, Austin College, Georgetown, Scripps, Pomona, CMC, and UVA), it was most like Pomona.

What I liked best about Rice:
(in no order)
location/campus
residential college system/no frats
size
strengths in many areas/many majors for its size
distribution requirements/no core
friendly students who are serious about academics
