going along with the "Why Duke" thread, can we have a why Robertson thread? What makes this better than other simply monetary scholarships? And you can take classes at the other college? If you're at UNC I could see how this would be awesome to take classes at duke, but if you're at Duke, why would you get excited about visiting UNC? And many winners often have to decide between Robertson and an Ivy HYP. Why should they choose Robertson?

do we have to submit duke app before dec 1 too?

no, you don’t, but someone please confirm me

Because Robertsons scholars are badasses. (the ones I know are all very nice people)

Its a good scholarship. Not many people get offered merit based scholarships at Duke. (or other competitive schools)

should we write about accomplishment which have to do with community involvement, since I know the Robertson has an emphasis on that? Or can these be academic?

Any Duke or Chapel Hill student can take a course at the other university if it’s not offered at his own university. The difference is that Robertson scholars actually live at the other university for a semester.

I have heard many Duke students say the same thing, and it irritates me. Chapel Hill has some amazing courses and professors, and Duke students would do well to take advantage of them. The Robertson bus runs every 30 minutes, and it’s incredibly easy to head over to Chapel Hill for class, the libraries, the Ackland Museum, etc.

I’ve taken Hittite, Near Eastern Archaeology, and Invertebrate Paleontology at UNC and plan to take Luwian next fall. I also chose to take Biological Oceanography at Chapel Hill because I didn’t want to spend a semester at the Duke marine lab.

well, because Duke is an elite school and elite schools don’t give out many academic scholarships

From RobertsonScholars.org:

“Students do not need to submit their applications to Duke and/or UNC-Chapel Hill until regular application deadlines of January 2 and January 15, respectively.”

The Robertson is significantly more than a monetary award, although the money is certainly not inconsequential. You get funding and support for three summers of service, research, travel, and exploration as well as for full tuition (as well as room and board and a living stipend if at UNC-Chapel Hill). You also become part of a tight-knit social and academic community, receive special advising and mentoring, and have unique access to both Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill.

All Carolina and Duke students can take up to one course each semester at the other school if it is not offered on their campus. The difference with Robertson scholars is that they can take unlimited courses and actually live at the other campus for a semester and have full student privileges at both schools.

I think the perception that Duke students have nothing to gain from visiting Chapel Hill is just flat-out wrong. UNC has a very well-regarded undergraduate business program, for example, and I know of a 2011 Duke Robertson who is thrilled about the idea of getting involved with that. Carolina’s language programs are also often taken by Duke Robertsons because they are seen as strong offerings, and as a larger university, UNC also has a wider variety of courses in general.

Duke certainly has a lot to offer UNC students as well. I myself am a 2011 UNC Robertson, and am excited to be taking a Documentary Studies course next semester at Duke. And I expect to take several public policy courses over at Duke as well, as I’ve heard incredible things about them.

It’s not uncommon to turn down HYPS for the Robertson. Reasons often include a sense that with the individualized attention, access to faculty, and limitless summer opportunities, the Robertson would be more likely to lead you in the direction you want to go in life. And the money certainly doesn’t hurt!

this is the right link for the online app right? even if we are only applying to duke.

I’m pretty sure you don’t apply per se for the Robertson scholarship if you are just applying to Duke. Unless somethings changed I’m pretty sure that all you do is fill out the application to go to Duke and then they chose people out of those applicants to come interview for the scholarships.

it doesn’t matter if youre applying to both schools or just one. You can choose to fill out the supplement or just take your chances and have the admissions people flag you for consideration. It’s recommended that you fill out the supplement.

Filling out the supplement is not required, but personally I think it’s a very good idea to fill it out if you have any interest in the scholarship. Duke Admissions does pull a few people from the regular applicant pool for consideration, but directly submitting the supplement is the only way to make sure the Robertson program sees your application.

It’s just not worth the risk of hoping that Duke will set you aside for consideration for the Robertson – especially because, even if you don’t fill out the supplement now, you’ll have to fill it out later if they do decide to pull you from the regular applicant pool and make you a semi-finalist.

And bigreddawgie, yes, that is the correct address for the online supplement regardless of whether you are planning to apply to Duke or UNC-Chapel Hill (or both).

one more question, what if one of the recommendations do not get sent in time. I kept on contacting my recommender, but she hasnt responded!

bigreddawgie you seem to be aplying for the exact same things as me…
I hope you rec gets done on time, but if not, it’s not that big of a deal. Dec 1 is a priority deadline and after all the suppplement is not absolutely necessary
I would still submit the supp tho even if you’re still missing the rec

bigreddawgie, I would get the recommendation in as soon as possible, but if it’s a few days late it is probably not a huge deal, as long as it still gets in soon. The admissions people understand that sometimes teachers/mentors take a while to get things in, and this should not reflect poorly on you.

yep, she sent it in already yay!

I just submitted my application. Any one else nervous? I really want the Robertson (especially to Duke)!

yeah i sent it in too, but I’m not really nervous because i already know it is a huge stretch for me
frankly, i don’t know what I would think if I got it at UNC. I might even turn that down. I can get scholarships at better schools than UNC. But if I get it at Duke, I’m pretty much definitely going to Duke. like that’s going to happen tho lol
I’d like to see some stats on how many ppl turned down the robertson at UNC and at Duke. Probly much higher at UNC
