Why is bates tuition so much more than other college/universities? My brother goes to Upenn and it is more prestigious than bates but cheaper…

better food; smaller classes; smaller endowment; more individual attention;nicer dorms..probably fewer expenses once you get there.

The Ivies have large endowments that allow them to charge a bit less. I don't think Bates is out of line with the other LAC's.

The tuition that some schools report does not include housing and meals. Bate's does. Also, Bates is considered a "best buy" school if you have financial need and are accepted. They give a lot of need based scholarship, but no merit based scholarship.

okay thaks

Even among other prestigious LACs, Bates' endowment is quite low (I think the second lowest in the NESCAC). That's why schools like Colby and Bowdoin have been able to eliminate loans while Bates doesn't have a prayer at that.

There is merit based aid available, though I'm not sure if it's available your freshman year. Incoming freshmen may not be eligible, but there are scholarships (like the Dana Scholars) that are awarded based on merit.
