What majors are really popular at Bryn Mawr? I'm interested in English and/or history, and possibly Education. Anyone out there got anything about those, too?

English is one of the most popular majors (along with politics, psychology, math and bio). Education is only available as a minor and/or for teaching certification. If you are interested in the exact number of students majoring in each subject, click here.

The English program here is very good, and is definitely quite popular. The education department (which is shared with Haverford) is amazing, as well. You cannot directly major in education at Bryn Mawr, that's true -- but the ideology behind that is that a teacher should have a degree in the subject he/she is planning to teach, not just in education in general. The minor program is more flexible than the certification program in some ways, but both are certainly doable with the English/history major programs, and are very good preparation for going into teaching after college.

So, let me know if you have any specific questions about any of that and I can try to help you out, or at least help point you in the right direction for answers. :)

Bryn Mawr has been my number one for a long time now. I really wish there was more of a discussion about it on here, but at this point, I've found the answers to almost all my questions. Anyone else waiting for admissions decisions?

i am! along with two good friends of mine. i really hope i get in. i dont have a definite first choice, but bryn mawr is in my top three!

leslie anne, what makes bryn mawr your first choice? have you visited?

HAVE I VISITED?! haha. let's just say yes for starters.
I did the Spring Open House as a junior and that's when I fell in love with the campus. These pink blossoms had fallen everywhere, and it looked like something out of a fairy tale. It was the first school that I felt I could be proud to go to, and yet it didn't feel impossible to get in, like I wasn't good enough.

Bryn Mawr, from the start, was the essential PERFECT FIT for me, although I still realize there's a chance I won't get in. Everything I learned about it just seemed to work, from the honor code to the work study programs, to the study abroad opportunities to the number of international women that attend. I love that parties are registered, because I don't want to have to deal with craziness, I need a quiet escape to read or rent movies or whatever.

Bryn Mawr makes me feel like I'm not idealistic; I really can have everything I want from a school. The women there are so different and yet they all seem to accept all the things Bryn Mawr demands of them. They really are a family, with all the traditions and superstitions and things.

I know this whole thing sounds so cheesy, but I can't describe to you how much I want to go.

Bryn Mawr isn't listed in the alphabetic listing on CC. Have any of you noticed that? I didn't think it had a place at all here, then I saw it under the liberal arts colleges heading. The other liberal arts colleges all have a linked heading in the alphabetical listing.

Fairy Tale? Oh, like this?

I don’t recall BMC having a pond though… must be something added in the last 10 years.

The pink blossoms you mention are probably from the weeping cherry trees that line many of the walkways.

In the fall time, after they drop their leaves, they make a silhouette that complements the gothic architecture perfectly… a little creepy at night. It’s like a fairy tale… before the “happy ending”… the perfect mood for Halloween or for hardcore studying.

i am waiting too! 1st april couldnt come any earlier for me. bryn mawr is my second choice though the gap between my first and second choice is narrowly closing as BM has been more friendly throughout the whole process. the campus is drop dead gorgeous. i like!

LeslieAnn, I was at the Spring Open House for Juniors, too, only I was a sophomore. :-) My mom couldn't stop taking pictures of all the flowers. Can you say idyllic?

The lake is behind Rhoads Dormitory (between Rhoads and the tennis courts). I've heard my daughter call it Lake Vickers but I don't know what its real name is or when or how it came to be.

haha, yeah. it was definitely breathtaking then.
i did a fall overnight, and brought my mom and my dad up separately to see the campus, and did an interview.

i feel like i set myself up for disappointment, though, falling in love so quickly. it will take some serious readjustment if i get a rejection letter.

when i have kids, i think i'm going to make sure they don't get unrealistic about their schools. i'm just dreamy about bryn mawr, it's probably not good.

i did a fall overnight, too! the big weekend in october, with a ton of other people.

i really loved the atmosphere and community environment. girls would see us traipsing around campus and start waving their arms, shouting "come to bryn mawr!!" it just felt like a school that i could really call my own, at some point.

Leslie Anne, why didnt you apply ED?

InVA,

Looks like it was built in 2002 for storm water runoff. There's a nice pic at the bottom.

Good question inspiration08. haha.
I was actually registered for ED, but we talked about financial aid during my interview, and the lady explained that I didn't want to get trapped in an aid package my family couldn't afford. I had to bump down to regular decision, but I guess it's in my file that ED was my first instinct.

As with the rest of existence, it just came down to money. We're lower middle class, and I have a sister who's in highschool, thinking about college and paying for braces, and my parents are adopting a little boy in a few months. The money was just too much to handle, I couldn't put us in a situation like that legally, you know?

Part of me wishes I could have stayed ED...I'm going to feel awful about the whole thing if I don't get in. Well...everything happens for a reason. I feel like I say that every day.

hey i just got accepted to bryn mawr and i just wanted to meet some more people who think theyre going.
