Im sure there are those who have had to make this decision. Both fine schools from what I can tell.

I would love to hear some feedback on things he should consider before deciding.

I haven’t decided yet, but when I do, I will base it off of these two factors:
- How large of a scholarship each school offers
- Trinity is actually in a city, whereas SW is in a tiny town

Still no guarantees; good luck!

Faculty, reputation, proximity to Austin… S.U. hands down.

lol mcfly!

Faculty, reputation, IN San Antonio, not A tiny town, TU hands down. Much prettier campus, too!

Yeah, gloworm I do like SW, though.

I now work for one of the country’s top liberal arts colleges, and I know Southwestern has a solid reputation within the liberal arts and education community, though its student body is quite heavily Texan.

Southwestern was an truly wonderful place to spend four years. Coming from Houston, being near Austin (versus San Antonio) seemed like more of an arts/cultural and educational plus. I guess another consideration is Southwestern is for undergraduates only, whereas Trinity caters to undergrads and professional programs…

Honestly, I know very little about Trinity because I was not interested in the San Antonio area, and I just wanted to share a bit more about S.U. In fact, during my (admittedly rather scattered and uninformed college search) I was looking primarily outside of Texas, but my campus/class visits (and scholarship) to S.U. snagged me.

My interactions with faculty and students, research with professors (in the humanities and social sciences predominately), and study abroad experiences were all pivotal in further piquing my intellectual curiousity, providing me with a solid platform to attend graduate school, and finding my career path in higher education.

I’m a fan of small, undergraduate liberal arts colleges, and Southwestern was a great fit for me. It’s been nearly 10 years since I graduated and I still keep in touch with much of the faculty and students I met there.

Last year I elaborated in more depth on my overall experiences at S.U., but I am not sure if the archives are still accessible.

I hope this helps!

Thank you for the responses regarding your impressions of Southwestern. We finally made the trip and visited the school, answered are own questions, and garnered our own impression. Your replies were greatly appreciated.

What did you end up deciding?

My son is currently deciding between Southwestern, Trinity, and a few others. Trinity offered substantially less money but I have to give them far superior marks in the way they approached my son’s recruitment. When he went for a visit he indicated his choice of majors and professors from two different departments drove in to campus to meet with him. I have no doubt that it is a very good school but the difference in approaches was distinct.

@thebeeve – When my DS toured Southwestern, he was also able to meet with a faculty member in his major; that’s one of the options on your campus tour. You can also sit in on a class, as well as meet with a coach if you are interested in athletics. So, SU offers that as well. DS also applied to Trinity, but we didn’t get as far as financial aid, so I can’t speak to that part.

But yes, both are excellent schools. SU is a small but gorgeous campus in a small town close to Austin; my son has been very happy there. Trinity is a bigger school in a really big town, but San Antonio has so much going on. I would have been happy for him to be there, if that had been his choice.
