I think brady meant that epgy will decide whether he wants to apply to Stanford or not based on how much he likes the program.

For me, it's cause Stanford has one of the top programs in the country for what I want to study (classics, ancient history) and it's on the west coast.
Well plus there's everything else that everybody here already knows.. And I'm in I love with their library.

I would be careful judging stanford either good or bad based upon the quality of EPGY. Being on campus, however, will give you a good idea of the culture/amenities of the university. Remember though, that its quite different during the summer.

The ONLY reservations I have for Stanford is that there is a fairly decent school very close to me (UCI), and that freshman can't have parking permits. I live in Orange County, and going to UCI would realllly be convenient, and fun at the same time. And the parking permits...my honda that I saved up for the better part of my life will be useless.

However, Stanford is excellent in everything else..

Yeah, I'll assume that the admin tries to make Stanford look better in the EPGY program (assuming many people in EPGY also are interested in applying to Stanford).

Dont worry about parking permits. Just make friends with an upper classmen who doesn't have a car.

or people will rent you lots off campus...

Really? I didn't know that was big. I would think that it would be more convenient to get an upperclassmen's spot. That's what I did.

Does anyone know what the Stanford orchestra is like?

A word of warning - Stanford seems to miss one thing: a culture of rampant and ever-present intellectual discussion. People don't want their dinner table conversations to be dominated by bull sessions on the future of the EU, the meaning of beauty or statistical methods. Not to say that the discussions don't occur, but you have to seek them out.

In all fairness, I don't want to suggest you WILL find this at other schools. My friends at Yale suggest things aren't that much better there. Your only refuge may be Hyde park

lki is right about that. Hyde Park is a good refuge, but so is Swarthmore, PA or Washington, DC.

As for the Stanford Symphony Orchestra, it's a pretty big deal and competition for seats is quite intense.

I've been thinking about all the creativity in the techie business world that has come out of Stanford. I think the location makes it a breeding ground
for the next Google, Yahoo, Sun, ...

when I think of Stanford, I think of awesomeness...
the people (and this board demonstrates)
the campus (very nice indeed with trees and fresh air as opposed to smog)
the weather (shorts year round... or just about... no complaints there)
the food (well, Cali in general has great food)
and everything else great you can think about. =)

added bonus: there is a sweet mall nearby

yeah, stanford is the bad*** rebel. you have your stuck up ivies and then comes stanford to pwn all their ***es. its the cool smart school. i mean theres mit and caltech-the nerdy schools, the ivies-the stuck up schools, and then theirs stanford-the top dog cool school. i mean just look at their mascot. when people see harvard's mascot they go "ok...thats stupid" and when the see stanford's they go "sweet, your mascot is a tree!" only one school is cool enough to pull off a tree for a mascot and that is stanford.

Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree,
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God aft day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Joyce Kilmer

there you have it
--> trees are awesome --> Stanford's mascot is a tree-->so Stanford is awesome --> and it's environmentally friendly

and I just made a poem, go me :)

By its tree mascot/symbol, are you suggesting that Stanford is somehow on intimate terms with God? Cause then I'm screwed.
...............haha jk

well no...
I'm agnostic...
I merely said trees are awesome... cause the poem makes them seem awesome....

?

Yeah, it's really true that most everyone here loves it. Just last night I was talking to a friend (freshman) who goes to Swarthmore. She was talking about how a whole lot of people she talked to really want to transfer out. That strikes me as incomprehensible. I may get a skewed version of the truth as a freshman, but everyone I know loves it here.

However, there are some negatives:
-The campus is really spread out, so there's not as much activity as there is on other college campuses. At times it's almost sleepy.

-Biking is fun, but it minimizes social interaction. You don't stop and say hello to people on the way to class.

-Like lki says - "A word of warning - Stanford seems to miss one thing: a culture of rampant and ever-present intellectual discussion." Although I've had a lot of really good intellectual conversations here, they're not as ever present here as I'd like for them to be. Stanford has a very, very non-pretentious culture; in fact, if you do something pretentious, it usually isn't received well. People are too afraid of being pretentious, I think, so that most people aren't openly intellectual all of the time. Also, it's kind of annoying that I'm surrounded by so many amazing people, but I have no idea what they've done (except for my friends) because they don't want to blow their own horns. However, I feel that Stanford errs on the safe side, that if I went to a school where people ********ted about russian czars to seem cool at parties (and I get the impression some of that goes on at HPY), I'd get really sick of it, really fast. Talking to pretentious people can get really tedious.

-Large parties are shut down at 2. That kind of blows.

"im not to keen on partying-i dont plan on drinking ever. is stanford the place to be?"

Your decision not to drink is respectable, and most everyone I've met here does respect that. Stanford has a really, really liberal alcohol policy--the RA's in my freshman dorm have been to parties on my floor where there is active drinking, and they don't care (the only limitation is that they can't drink with us). But you should party--you don't have to drink, just go out to meet people. Make the most of your college years.

Soccerfanatic, with your interests, you might be tempted to take an IHUM called Old World Encounters. Don't, unless you absolutely love reading a whole lot of ancient texts. It's pretty much agreed to be the worst IHUM out there.

lol thanks for the advice. Althugh ancient texts kind of sound interesting....... but apparently it doesn't turn out that way, and I'll be wary, assuming, of course, I can get in.

I am very dissapointed in you guys. These posts make it seem that you have NOT researched Stanford enough...

The tree is not Stanford's mascot. It is the mascot of the marching band.

GO CARDINAL!
