I second the request for more info on Stanford's Econ department...anybody?

balanced academics, large azn population, weather, beaches in CA..

How good is the mathematics program at Stanford? Physics? Economics?

ALL of Stanfords departments are strong. Seriously. I know its known particularly for Computer Science (silicon valley is obviously a perk) but thats one of the biggest strengths of the school. There isn't really a bad major.

Physics is supposed to be tough but really awesome. Doug Oscheroff, who recently won the nobel prize in physics, is a professor there. and of course theres the SLAC

ashveer, i agree i feel terrible when that happens, like some people i know right now that are in all IB classes and they slack off. there are kids smart enough to be in IB but couldnt get because of one test score....
i worked my way to IB but i dont have all classes yet... soon though

and by the "kids that are smart enough" i wasnt referring to me i was referring to friends of mine and just people i know

Stanford has a large Asian population? Or is this relative to Ivy league schools. 20-so percent is high for Ivy League schools, but it's pretty small for say, the UC's right?

considering that asians only make up 4% of the nation's population, i would say that 20 percent is pretty large nonetheless.

if it is good enough for CALTECH's Ben Golub .....

So after reading all the posts in this thread, is it correct to assume that

Stanford students are smart, maybe nerdy but in the funnest way. Like they'll crack jokes using a play on whatever terms they learned in class but everybody will laugh because it's just so lame. But other than that, every individual is great in his/her own way, and friendly too.

Everyone is busy busy busy but you won't hear people complaining too much because it is just so incredibly fun at Stanford

You will love the school from the moment you start classes until the day you die

You can get really close with most of the professors because you can tell they are passionate about the subject and they love teaching it

Everybody's down the earth

Education's great all-around so going in undeclared wouldn't be bad at all

You'll get a great sense of school unity and pride from lots of planned school-wide events and the school teams (sports, band, etc)

Weather's great. sunny but not too hot. can get kinda chilly sometimes but not freezing

Academics are tough but do-able

Living accomodations are fantastic. Shower, room, food and all.

There are things to do no matter what. Even though Stanford is basically where students will be staying in for the next 4 years, there's still lots to do in the surrounding area, but it can get pricey. But most students just stay on campus because there are so many activities to get involved with.

??

I'm trying to get the correct image of Stanford so that I don't sound like I'm making things up when I talk with teachers or alumni about what I like about it and why it suits me (something I'm pretty sure all high school seniors can relate to at this time). Being such a great school, most everybody around me has only heard of its name but not really too much about it in depth. I visited in March for the first time since I was 8 years old. It is much more majestic than I remember.

Btw, how good is Stanford's business? I'm leaning more towards managerial, not financial.

Sorry if I made any errors in my assumptions that totally offend you.

=)

After reading this thread, I started a similar one in the Princeton forum, asking both prospective and current students what makes Princeton so awesome.

I got very few replies.

Did no one mention the Athletics!?!?!? They win the director's cup like every year! Stanford is said to have one of the most, if not the most, physically fit campus in the country.

so for your guys' SCEA supplement question "Why Stanford" what did you end up discussing?

I just said that I'm passionate about everyting i do and even though I won't commit suicide if I don't attend there, that Stanford was the one place I felt at home with, the only place that i actually felt I would love learning and being around people similar to myself.

Just wondering - is Stanford very competitive? Especially for 'in-demand' majors such as bio?

Competitive in what way? Admissions? Academics at Stanford?

Admissions is obviously quite competitive. Stanford is not competitive in a screw over your friends so you'll do better on the test sort of way. Even in pre-med classes, the worst it gets is possibly refusing to help people outside of your study group, but still helping those in your study group. Students tend to be co-operative and supportive of each other. It is, however, inherently competitive when it comes to grades given the high caliber of students. When all the students in your classes are incredibly bright and hardworking and not all of you will get As, there is bound to be some sort of competition.

Does that answer the question you're asking?
