I've read about a lot of people that want to study abroad, but I don't understand why it's necessary. Is it that schools in other countries have more prestige, or is it just for the change in scenery?

P.S. I was interested in engineering, if it makes a difference.

It’s mostly for the “change in scenery” as you describe it, at least for me. Because really, calculus, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics are the same no matter where you go. Just make sure to learn them in your native language.

I’m an engineer and I intend to study abroad too.

Ummm I just got home from studying abroad with around 30 engineering majors from Michigan, Purdue and Georgia Tech, so I have no idea what you’re talking about…

some people study abroad b/c it’s required, like if you’re majoring in a language, or if you’re majoring in something like international studies, it’s strongly recommended.

Also, depending on the school and scholarships you get, sometimes it’s about the same price for tuition to study in a different country

people do it to experience a new culture, to practice speaking a new language, meet new people, to see different countries and different parts of the world… I think you learn a lot more studying abroad

I don’t think the question is why someone would want to study abroad, it’s why not?

Christmas, do you mind posting something about your experience? Like which country, and what were the most striking things you gained? My S is a rising soph and he’s talking about going abroad next summer, and I’d rather get some details from someone with first hand experience.

We are a global society. It is always beneficial to experience how others live and, perhaps, to see things from their perspective. Besides, it will likely be a long time before you are able to travel so easily and lightly again!

Studying abroad is a lot of fun. When else will you have the chance to live abroad for an extended period of time? Its definitely an experience you will always remember.

On the other hand, it can also be good for your career if you have specific majors or interests. Major consulting firms (BCG/McKinsey/Bain) look highly on these experiences.

I’ve always wanted to study abroad, but my school doesn’t allow it. Studyin abroad seems like a good opportunity to learn a new language, see how a different country works and still learn at the same time. It also looks good on your record for things like engineering because it shows that you are adventurous and have your eyes open to the world.
