Rice competes in a famous programming contest(ACM) each year. What shocks me is that Rice finished in the last place in THREE consecutive years in the South Central regional, composed of schools in Texas, Okhahoma, and Louisiana!! Even A&M, UT, Baylor University are better than us!!

I don't understand. Aren't we owls supposed to be the best students in Texas? And isn't Rice supposed to have a good CS department? If so, why in the world are we the worst in three states

It should be a disgrace not only on us CS majors but on the whole university.

Still can't believe this..

I don’t know. You mention that you are a CS major.

What does this competition entail? I know we have a very theoretical CS program. Could this be it?

Whoa there, cowboy.

Have you ever considered the actual sample of Rice kids who participate in ACM? I’m not a CS major, but from what it looks like, Rice CS kids probably aren’t terribly interested in competing in the first place, and so whichever Rice CS kids who do participate in ACM may not necessarily represent the top Rice kids in CS.

It’s all a voluntary thing, you see.

That’s quite a leap of logic you took there. I completely agree with hotasice. Who even participated in this? Rice’s CS program is a fraction of the size of UT’s. And my son, who’s a senior CS major at Rice, would have no interest in participating in a programming competition.

Every self-motivated, ambitious CS major should consider comepeting in the most famous programming contest. I posted this post not trying to judge Rice CS’s programm but to raise awareness of this situation. We don’t want to be looked down, especially by kids at UT.

Do you actually care what CS majors at other schools think? Spend less time worrying about them and think more about the opinions of graduate schools and employers.

I am still curious about what the OP thinks the cause is. xelliotpenguin - do you compete?

Sorry Guys! The information I gave was misleading for I heard it from someone else. Rice has three different ACM teams, and two of them really sucked. However, Rice Blue Team is fairly good and got placed for several times during regional. Still, we need improvement.

I am so confused. If you are a CS major - why don’t you get people to compete with you?

I’m not sure what we could do/say on a forum that would answer any questions about this or help improve anything.

It’s just that I don’t know there’s any better forum. I wish there would be a owlforum for things like this.

I’m not seeing how any forum would be particularly useful, unless it was made up solely of Rice CS majors. Why don’t you just talk to people in your classes?

Because they’re CS majors.

^^ooooo. That’s cold. :D
