Why the lady in admission at the University of Chicago is so cold?

I called the admission office today to ask about summer visit, the lady seemed so reluctant to talk to me anything. Did anyone have the similar experience?

Perhaps they are very busy with admitted students’ event taking place now. My experience with UChicago people has been wonderful so far.

I agree with Maxxwell. All of my experience with the admissions department (particularly with my admissions counselor) has been wonderful. The replies are ALWAYS warm (even before I got in) and I get answers VERY fast (once I got an e-mail in under 10 minutes). In my eyes, they’re close to perfect (much better than any of the other universities that I’ve applied to).

Yeah, they’re usually amazing - admitted students weekend is probably stressing them out.

Here were questions I asked and her answers.
Can I sit in the class during visit? No.
Can I see the dorm, class room, lab, or dinnng facility? No.
What can we do during visit? Information session and see campus.
If we can not see dorm, class room, lab, or dinning facility, then what part of campus we will see? The buildings.
She did not explain why? She seems annoyed by my questions, her tone was very unfriendly.

Many schools only do dorm visits for accepted students to respect people’s privacy. Class and lab visits can be disruptive. You might be able to email a professor directly and ask if you can sit in on a class. Most of the buildings were unlocked so you can in fact see the dining facilities even if they aren’t part of the regular tour.

Visited UChicago recently and sat in a few classes. No problem.

Sitting in on classes is usually not a problem, I would check again. Seeing a dorm room can be accomplished by going to a dorm when students are present and asking if anyone would show you their room. S2 did this on his college visits and had no problem seeing dorms.

Wildwood, I think most of the perceived difficulty you are experiencing is due to your asking about a summer visit; while we make every effort to have tour guides and the admissions office open during the summer, “real UChicago” is simply not in session, so we can’t offer all of the benefits we might have during the school year. We offer class visits during the academic year to interested students, but since you mentioned that you are visiting over the summer, our staff member was correct; it is unlikely that a class visit will be included in your visit, simply because the (rather sparse and specific) courses offered during the summer do not often coincide with our Summer Visit Days for interested students or tour times.
To minimize student disruption, we reserve dorm visits for accepted students at specific programs when we can organize willing students with example rooms to show them off. Also, during the summer, only one of our dormitories will be open (Max Palevsky), and we do show certain areas of Max on tours. Dining facilities often have limited summer hours, but Bartlett dining hall is open to service summer programs on campus, and you are welcome to have lunch there if you wish.

What about meeting with faculty/department heads during the summer? It’s nearly impossible for us to visit during the academic year so summer is the only option. Oh, and how can we find out if UChicago will be at the BISSCA (Boston area private school) college fair this year?

Thank you UChicagoPSAC for your explanation. I wish the lady could explain it like you did. I called several other universities about summer visit. All other the representatives were nice and patient to tell me what to do, but this lady at UChicago. I wanted to tell her she was very arrogant and unprofessional, I really wish University of Chicago could find a nice person to represent this great institution.

@nemom- if you’d like to meet with faculty or department heads, e-mail the departmental secretary (different departmental websites will have contact information) to see who will be available during the times of your visit and whether you can arrange a meeting. I am not sure if we will be at the BISSCA fair- we most likely will be- but I will find out and post when I know for sure.

Hello UChicagoPSAC,

If we visit UChicago during the week of May 17, can the prospective student sit in a class? What activities do you offer during visit?

Thank you.

i had the same experience about a month ago!! it was funny.

@wildwood, if you visit during the school week you will be able to sit in on a class. During the official admissions office portion of the visit, we offer an information session led by an admissions counselor, a campus tour, and the ability for the student to eat in one of the dining halls should you choose to do so. We also have knowledge of a variety of events going on on campus that week; should you be interested in those, check in with us in Admissions when you come for your visit, and we will be able to suggest something.
