I've been considering to transfer for the fall of 2011 ( i know that's a while from now) but as I was looking through the common app for a typical transfer essay question, I'm pretty stumped. What if the primary reason for me transferring is b/c of financial aid reasons or simply because I was rejected from my dream college and feel I belong there. I'm considering schools like Cornell, Northwestern and Emory and I know the essay has a huge factor on admissions for transfers, any suggestions?

I think if you put that down as the basis of the essay then you probably wont be getting in… they probably get so many of those they almost throw them in the dumpster when they see them. Could mention it but I wouldn’t base the essay on it.

My opinion … could be wrong.

you shouldn’t need other people to tell you why you want to transfer. other people have legitimate reasons, so why can’t you come up with them yourself?

and yeah, the whole money thing isn’t really that important. as for feeling like you belong there, you can work with that. you need to be way more specific, though.

Why don’t you find some way to link what you want to do in your future/major with what that particular school offers? Telling a school that they are second or third best to you and you’re only applying because of a raw FA deal isn’t going to win over anyone that reads that essay. Whoever said honesty is the best policy lied, especially in this situation. I’m not saying make your essays 100% what you think admissions wants to hear, but weave a story about what you think that school has to offer and how you can benefit from it and what you can add to it if there’s not a given prompt.

And fall of 2011 isn’t all that far away. I’m looking to transfer from my community college for that semester and the application for the schools I’m looking at are due as early as March. The time from now to then will probably fly by.
