I am an official member of the Meredith Reynolds Fan Club. Her admissions info session was the best we went to and definitely was a big part of my D’s decision to make Tufts her #1.5.
I read the blog post linked above “Why Tufts” by Ms. Reynolds. ormdad, you must be kidding? No? This is marketing twaddle.
@GreenIndian I am fascinated by your periodic return to this site with the singleminded purpose of pointing out Tufts’ flaws. I don’t really care why you do it, I just find it fascinating. It shows real conviction.
“Tufts has an unpretentious quality to it that, to me, always seems at odds with the accomplished and intellectual people that populate its buildings. It is a place where thoughtfulness and humility take precedence, and with each act of kindness I witness I feel more and more grateful for this treasure I’ve found on a little hill in Medford.”
I wasn’t kidding about appreciating Ms. Reynolds, but I suppose that is somewhat separate from the blog post, which admittedly, is a little cheesy. To each his or her own, I guess.
My D and I visited Tufts today. She also thought it was one of the best info sessions she’s been to. As a parent, I appreciated that the presenter emphasized that if you approach it the right way and choose your schools thoughtfully, this should be a fun process, with just a little bit of healthy stress. I’ve been saying the same thing to her. Now we just need to get her SAT scores later this month (fingers crossed).
@ormdad, the admissions blog is a little old, but @greenindian was just trying to point out that having a football team with players that are kind can be a serious flaw. After all, going into homecoming last year, the Tufts football team had a 31-game losing streak.
But the story does not end with the incident in the admissions blog . That proud old grandma must have said something inspirational to the players, because they won their first game in four years at last year’s Homecoming!
The dedicated, hopelessly optimistic fans stormed the field.

The team went on to win all their home games last year, and finished with a respectable 4-4 record.
This year, the team is undefeated going into this weekend’s Homecoming Game and they had 4 seconds of national fame along with division one football powerhouses Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M. (Don’t blink at the 35 second mark in the ESPN video, or you will miss it.)

So, it appears that being kind isn’t as serious a flaw as greenindian thinks, and nice guys don’t always have to finish last - even in football.
In fact, Tufts’ hopelessly optimistic fans are looking forward to another good year and actually wondering - is it possible for nice guys to come in first?
