I’m applying to Tulane by next week, and I have my Why Tulane? essay mostly fleshed out. I know what I want to write about, which programs I want to focus on and basically the body of the essay is ready, just waiting to be fleshed out.
Except now I’m confused about which format to write the essay in. Originally I had begun writing it in the standard essay format, with an introduction followed by the reasons Tulane is the best fit for me. But then I had an idea and I was thinking of writing it like a reel of what I envision my time at Tulane to be like. Like freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, senior year.
I like the idea because it’s different and a little quirky, I think, but I’m not sure if adcoms will like it. Any opinions?
@fehministic The biggest thing that you do not want your essay to be is forgettable. Second biggest thing you don’t want it to be is generic where it sounds like the essay could apply to most any school. Quirky? As long as it has proper spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure then I think quirky could work in your favor to stand out as being memorable. Just keep in mind that they get tens of thousands of applications so they have probably already seen most everything. Don’t be quirky just for the sake of being gimmicky or different. Make sure to be you, and make sure you show them your specific knowledge of what you think makes Tulane special and how you will participate.
GO FOR IT!!! my why Tulane essay was super creative and unique and not a basic essay. I asked my regional counselor and he said my essay was one of the best he’s seen in years because it was unique and didn’t follow the format most did. I received a scholarship
