It doesn't make any sense.. You guys said GIT is wrong, right?? But, GIT's original name is Georgia Institute of Technology. So,we could say GIT.. for example, MIT's original name is Massachusetts Institute of Technology.. According to u guys saying, do we have to call it MT???

The California Institute of Technology is called Caltech, not CIT or CT. There doesn't have to be one hard and fast rule for this. It all depends on what the common name for the school is.

Most people call the school Georgia Tech, hence the GT. The same goes for Virginia Tech being called VT.

No one calls it Massachusetts Tech, so MT wouldn't make sense.

Here in the South, we like things simple. G-I-T first of all, sounds weird, and it takes too long to say. GT makes more sense, since we call it Georgia Tech. However, once you get down here, GT is simply called "Tech." (Because mostly, you're at UGA or Tech...there really aren't a whole lot of other options)

Git Er Done.

actually people call it GeorgiaTech, that's where the GT comes from. If you watch basketball, Georgia Tech calls itself GT too because they draw a big "GT" in mid court.

It's because Georgia Institute of Technology is too long, so for everyday speak, it's shortened to "Georgia Tech". Like such:

And to shorten it even further for lazy people, Georgia Tech becomes just "GT".

The school's logo is "GT."
