i guess ucsd is more prestigious

Grad'06,

I shortboard. There are tons of good breaks in San Diego - Scripps, Blacks, and Wind 'n sea. Keep in mind, Mexico is just 45 minutes away. I would recommend UCSD if you want a good balance between surfing and academics. When I went to school there, I surfed before and after my classes. My dorm, Thurgood Marshall, was nestled above Blacks Beach so it was quite convenient. You will have a blast down here especially after surfing breaks like 54th street. Like you, I am orginally from Orange County. You will find that the surf is much cleaner down here. UCSD is not boring, contrary to popular belief, especially for surfers.

that sounds great. during college i have a feeling i'll be surfing at least three times a week (in between classes, assuming i dont have too much work). the water here (especially the Newport Pier) is just disgusting. and like you said Mexico is less than an hour away. do you ever go down there? just curious but what was your sat/sat2 score and gpa that got you into UCSD? i shortboard as well (6'3) also did you have a car when you went there or did you just take the bus/bike?

Grad'06,

Keep in mind that this was in 1998...a lot less competitive then. My GPA was a 4.1 weighted, SAT was a 1320, 4s on all three AP tests..Bio, US History, Econ, Senior Class Pres., and Varsity letterman. With these stats, I was accepted to UCLA, UCSD, and UCSB Honors Program. The scores and stats for you high schoolers now are insane. But then again, students back then didn't really take courses like Princeton Review to "crack" the SATs. I bought a $20 dollar prep book and that was it. I had a car my first year which was nice. Was it necessary? No, but definately came in handy. My friends and I would take surf trips to Mex a few times a year and we would have a blast. There are tons of fun, uncrowded breaks in Mex.

here are my stats for UCSD:

so i shouldnt be counting on ucsd?

just get a bunch of ECs and try to get ELC and yuo should be fine even w/out tose you are fine

whats elc? so 50% chance?

The new SAT score system throws me off. I am not very familiar with it. I know that the stats for incoming freshman for the past few years has been around 1320 SATs and 4.0 GPA. You have a good chance of admission if your scores hover around this range. One thing I noticed when I was a freshman was that UCSD admits a well rounded bunch - -kids with solid extracurricular activities. A lot of ASB presidents, club presidents, and varsity athletes (bookworms and nerds with good social/people skills). The majority of people I met were friendly and laid back. I don't know if things have changed. I would definately advise you to apply to UCSD. I think that you will like it here.

my score is equiv to 1250 on old.

b u m p

I think a previous poster hit the nail on the head. UCSD is more prestigious academically, of course, but lacking on the "party scene".
