Why UNC?

I have a rather open-ended question to this forum, especially for the OOS candidates: why do you wish to go to UNC?

I am a Tarheel born and a Tarheel blue and, well, you know the story. I have traveled and lived all over the US and I came back here. I am a forum member because my daughter wants to be a part of the UNC experiance. But I am curious what draws the distant student to Chapel Hill. Does EVERYONE know its the "Southern Part of Heaven?"

Well, a lot of things attracted me to UNC. Here's why I really want to get in as an OOS candidate (in no particular order):

1) Close to home, but not too close. I live just outside of Atlanta, so I'll be far enough away that I won't see my classmates from HS everyday but can still come home for the weekend if I really needed to.

2) Excellent education. Before I knew that UNC was ridiculously hard to get into, my mother had mentioned it to me and I looked it up (I was maybe 13 years old) and was impressed by what I saw. Everyone I talked to said it was the best education from a public school -- and better than most private.

3) Price. I can get a great education without paying $45,000 a year.

4) The school itself. I visited UNC this summer and fell in love with it. The area is BEAUTIFUL and such a college town -- but still urban. I loved talking to students and the whole feel of the university. I really connected with the people there (definitely my type) and the atmosphere presented by the university -- while when I visited UGA I just came back with a bad taste in my mouth, even though it's a great school too.

5) I want to study Communication, and UNC has an excellent program.

Good luck to everyone!!
