so, about the “why upenn” essay, i heard that it’s the first thing they read, even on top of the personal essay and all other supposed-to-be-important stuff. is that true? cuz my “why upenn” is totally crappier than my personal essay.

So........you just wanted to vent?

no..........i want to know if the "why upenn" essay is more important or as important as the personal essay.....cuz if it is, then i gotta go back and work on it.

Take it from a Quaker........rework it. Personal is important but so it the "tell us why here and what are you gonna do it 'ya get here" essay. good luck and if you come to Penn you are gonna love it!

How specific are we supposed to be when writing about programs, opportunities, etc. about Penn that fit us? It's difficult to not sound like a college brochure when writing this, but I wanted to incorporate my interests and personality into the essay and make connections between me and Penn. Unfortunately, doing this would make my essay too long if I go too much into specifics. What to do? By the way, I'm applying ED and I have an essay, but I'm going to scrap it and redo it. Yikes.. app's due in 3 days..

I think you are making more of this than need demands. What is attracting you to Penn? What majors/dept are you considering? You sound as if you have done some research.......make a short list of what it is that is making you want to apply ED. That might help you get started. Relax and make it simple.

KRabble, we r on the same boat.
as far as what i have for "why upenn", i think u first mention ur situation that got u interested in UPenn, for example, u were a business fan since early childhood and stuff like that; say a bunch of those and then correspond them to all the details of the program u r applying to. i think.

hazmat i'm working on mine right now; since u r a Penn student already, got any tips on the app??

Sure just a couple.....tell about yourself and your character. Tell something about what you can add to the class you are hoping to join. I think students tend to focus so much on stats etc and forget that each individual student has life experience that they bring along with their brainiac stuff. Are you committed to something particular........make friends easily, feel strongly about particular traits you have.........tell about yourself and your character. I call it ife values and lessons. What makes the class strong is that everyone is different, not all suburban, not all coming from prep schools, not all coming from high achievement parents.....the things you are living....tell about that.

Best of outcomes to all of you and I hope you get the FAT LETTER for it is a great experience to be here.

in my personal essay, i told about my trip back to china and how i grew from that; or actually the theme was growing up and the trip back and forth between china and USA was part of my growth. what i'm sure from my essay is that it's definitely very personal and my ap eng. teacher liked it very much. so does that show any "difference" about me?

Of course.....it tells about you and your character. I have not been "back & forth" btwn US and China but I sure would like to know about it. I take it you have Chinese parentage of one, the other or both. Your experience would certainly be a contribution. I think it sounds great! It is hard to self examine and write down the journey for stangers.....but you did it and best of luck to you. My best friend here is studying East Asian Culture and Mandarin Chinese.....he spent the summer doing academics there and loved it. It was his second trip and I look forward to going w/ him sometime.

oh thank u hazmat thank u thank u thank u~~ ^ ^
yes i'm pure chinese; my mom's chinese, and i have a stepdad who's american. i'm lookin forward to studying abroad in China and b/c Penn offers Peking and Tsinghua (the top two universities in China---dude that's huge) as two of their designated abroad colleges, man i'm so in. and that's one of the reasons why i chose Penn too.

one thing though; i thought asians have a "prejudiced advantage" for almost all ivy league schools (if u know what i mean); is my background gonna hurt me?

You are who you are.........why worry about a variable you cannot control? Good Luck and I hope you become a Quaker soon.
