Why Upenn?

What are your reasons for choosing UPENN? Is it the US NEWs Ranking of Top National Colleges? Is it because of your parents? Why Penn?

For me its the prestigious school at Wharton. im interested in business.

Location=NE=snow+rain+cold=:)

you consider PA to be new england? i definitely don't, i live in MD

northeast...lovely weather

Ease of travel to NYC/DC/Boston......great restaurants.

yeah, that too

26e u represeting FL too?? are u doing ED for Penn? Florida has better weather than Philly except for Hurricanes. Any other people with diff. reasons than weather for applying to Penn?

For my Why Penn essay, the thing that bothers me is that academics-wise, many schools can offer the same education / resources as Penn. What interests me about Penn really is that Wharton is truly the best undergrad business education you can get / the flexibility of coursework between colleges is really nice too. But isn't that something that EVERYONE will mention? I'm more of a details person, like during the tour, I was really looking at the architecture / art deco, seeing how people acted, and that's what truly impressed me about Penn.

Weather really isn't a big deal for me, I was born in Philly, and I've lived in Boston for 16 years (only 1 year in Philly). Snow is no big deal. Oh, I mentioned that location is a big factor for my decision to apply to Penn because I was conceived two blocks from the admissions office, yet I don't remember it at all (I was 1) and I haven't been back since (except to visit Penn!). Is this really weird or something kind of special? lol.

you were concieved when you were 1??? weird....

lol whoops.. i was conceived in philly.. born at hahneman hospital (sp??).. lived in philly for 1 year (which i dont remember) then moved to good old Massachusetts.

i figured. yeah, i'm applying ED, and i can assure you the weather is MUCH nicer in PA than in FL. Hurricanes are a pain, yeah, but it's the 105 degree summers and snowless winters that drive me up the wall. i have to wear sunscreen here in the middle of december. NEVER move to FL!
Other than weather, the campus is very nice, the bookstore was a lot of fun (yes, dork, i know), and the people dont seem to be as, you know, as the Hahvahd crowd.

Yea.. I visited Princeton the same day as I visited Penn (big rivals I know..). It was particularly chilly that day and I kept sneezing, but at Penn, students passing by actually said God bless you to me. Two Wharton '07ers even stopped to join the tour group to ask me if I had any questions. I was just totally taken by surprise by how nice Penn students were. At Princeton, however, not one single student said bless you to me (I know it's kind of trivial, but it matters a lot to me), not even the kids in the tour groups!

Can't really say weather on mine, because I live in Hawaii, and who's gonna prefer PA's weather over sunny Hawaii's? I really don't know what to write in my Why Upenn essay. But I've never been to a big school, and I've never been to a secular school either. I thought presence of competition is good, b/cuz I've never had classmates that could challenge me academically. Is that a good reason?

yeah, as long as you dont degrade them.

Philly's weather sucks. Summers are terrible, and in winter, while there isn't much snow, the wind and everything really sucks. But when its nice out, its beautiful.

i feel so weird when everyone on earth lists my dream day, weather-wise, and then explains how much it sucks

My idea of nice weather is actually quite bizarre. I like rainy days, windy days are my favourite and my ideal temperature range is 45-55 (aka weather that I can wear longsleeves in but feel comfortable). I also don't mind bitter winters. At my school, we had a "cold day" where we didn't need to go to school because it was -35F (-55F windchill) outside. So my friends and I had a bundled up picnic on a frozen pond. Cute.

not bizarre at all. we're the normal ones, says I ;)

I was just impressed by the energy of the students, and the sparkle in their eyes as they walked by(cheesy, I know) . I just felt that they were so happy to be there. Also, the opportunities for a great social life as well as academic growth are very attractive to me. Penn is the perfect urban school, in my opinion, because it has the vitality of a city school, but the comfy, united green capmus as well.

My why Penn essay is filled with little details, like the fact that you can take music lessons for free in your dorm (I play piano), etc.

I think if your only reason for wanting to go to Penn is because of Wharton's prestige, then maybe adcoms will see through that....I'm sure we can all find some charming details of Penn that really show our passion for the school.

I'd love to continue piano lessons at Penn. Although I'm not the best pianist, and I try hard to find practice time (although I'm all too often tied up with apps and APs), I really love music and it's a hobby I'd like to continue. Like my brother at Cornell basically just left his violin at home because he wasn't willing to join any campus ensembles nor were there any programs like Penn's for him to continue. Kind of a waste IMO
