Why Upenn?

georgiegirl, some might consider you lucky. At my school, it's quite the opposite. There are 10 kids (maybe more) applying ED to Penn from my school. Literally, all of my friends want to go there. Still, I don't think anyone from my school wants it was badly as I do, but it just makes it difficult to deal with all of the competition, especially, when you're competing against your peers and fellow friends.

helix-oh wow really? ok I see your point then, I can't imagine being in school with kids as motivated and set on Penn as I am. I'm just complaining because I'm sick of explaining the difference between UPenn and Penn State...especially to my guidance councelor lol

from what I've read you seem to have a lot going for you though..good luck!

Ahh.. Helix, I know how you feel and it sucks! I hope it helps that I'm the only Asian male applying from my school (I know it probably won't help much if at all, since Asians aren't URMs because they're all smart. I've been well-informed that no matter how hardworking I am, it's expected out of me, since I'm Asian lol..). O WELL! By the way, there are about 10 white kids and literally 5 Asian girls (at least) applying to Penn ED so far ahh!!

georgiegirl, I completely understand the frustration you have when people confuse UPENN and Penn State. The day I walked into my counselor's office and told her I was applying ED to Penn, she said, "If you really have your heart set on Penn State......". It was hard to contain myself while I explained that I wanted UPenn, not Penn State. She just gave me a weird look, considering 90 percent of our school's seniors go to Penn State.

Thank you for the kind words! I wish you the best of luck as well:D

KRabble, looks like we're in the same boat, with so many kids applying ED to Penn. You seem to have things under control though, so no worries. I know the Asian stereotype can get to you, and I can somewhat relate. My parents are foreign, and I was born in a different country. We came here 8 years ago, and my parents aren't the most laid back people, as you can imagine. Because we've had to work so hard to get where we are, they've always stressed education and being PERFECT. I'm expected to be stellar at everything because I'm a foreign kid, and people from different cultures are sometimes expected to have this unbelievable work ethic.

I've tried to live up to the expectations, but I'm far from perfect.

Let's just hope we all stand out!

Speaking of the Penn-Penn State confusion, my friend embarassingly said this at the Upenn Conference in our school right in front of the admissions officers:

-When applying to Penn State do you need--
(Every one in the background--NO, UPENN)
-Right, Penn State--I mean Upenn.

I've not even gonna begin to say what happened at the Yale conference--let's just say everyone with a 77 average showed up. Embarassed the rep who came to our school (Brooklyn Tech) for the 1st time. One kid asked, So yeah, I hear New Haven sucks, I was driving by once and all I saw were 3 office buildings and some projects, what else is there?

This girl in my homeroom looked at the application for UPenn I had in my bag and she got really mad at me and said, "I hate you. How the hell will I get into Penn State if you're applying there?"

I was too lazy to explain to her that I wasn't applying to Penn State. I just smiled. ^_^

I have a bunch of friends at Phillips (Academy) and practically half the seniors there apply to Wharton. Crazy!

26e: Resist the urge, buster!

Just to contribute an anecdote to the "What's Upenn" story-sharing. Last week, during one of my classes, I pulled out my Penn application to look it over because we had some free time. One of my best friends, who was sitting next to me, caught a glimpse of the application and asked me "Allan, why are you applying to '*****' School?" I know it's a crude joke, but it's an indication of how many people here in Hawaii actually know about Penn, and the UPenn/Penn St. confusion is also very evident. The registrar at my school told me that it's very easy to get into Upenn because a girl got in there last year with a 3.5 GPA, but she had actually got into Penn State. Wish Penn would be that easy....

lol, spazallan. Many kids from my school also think it's Penn State. My friends, on the other hand, know the difference, which is all that matters.

I wish it was as easy to get into Penn as it was to get into Penn State.

Why Penn? B/C it's awesome!!

because penn has the weirdest peoples, clearly! it's fun! um....decided to stay up to get 2 more posts.

(#899)

here..lemme help you push it to 900...reply to this post ^_^

weirdest people? i think the term "social" is preferable lol

eclectic, slightly eccentric, people are awesome.

i wonder if anyone put why not in bold letters... blue and red...

why penn? cuz its awesome...to quote my friend...

"i mean, in terms of parties its second best (to cornell), in terms of location its second best (to columbia), in terms of focus on undergrads its not in the top three, but i'll admit that its business school is the best"

over 20 people from my school applied to UPenn EARLY. trust me everyone knows what penn is. no one confuses it with penn state. our school, esp our class is so competitive. good thing only 4 people i know of including myself applied to wharton. this one guy will def get in cuz he stated his own comp business and made tons of money. would it help that im a girl? wharton lacks in girls big time.

it looks like harry potters.

in all seriousness though. its full of intelligent people who are capable of having fun. the location is ideal. but its an urban campus that manages to hold on to that school spirit feeling. the campus is studly looking.

UPenn is my first choice, above HYPS.
Why? Huntsman program, great location, etc.

honestly? not the academics but the activities, and the huge culture diversity aspect, as well as the fact that the students can get teachers from cim
