why usc?

I have noticed many students with strong stats (particularly those seeking admission to the honors college) are looking at usc, which is certainly an excellent university, but it does not have the reputation as some of the other state schools like UNC, UIUC, UVA, UC, or some of the private universities. I was just wondering what attracted everyone the the University of South Carolina, and what other schools you are looking at.

UNC doesn't have Steve Superior or a real estate major.
Chicago is basically a distant, frozen tundra.
UVA will make me wait two years before I see a business class (and I have to reapply to the "commerce" school).
UC (Cal Berkeley?) Again, won't see a business class for two years.

USC has a number of things going for it: southern hospitality, real estate major, warmth, Columbia, fantastic honors college, Spurrier, beautiful campus, and ofcourse, the potential for getting the full ride, McNair Scholarship.

Other places I applied: Penn, Stanford, Princeton, UGA, Indiana, Notre Dame, Carnegie Mellon, UVA.

For our S, it was the great tour and all the information we received about the school. They really made it seem like they wanted him to apply-not the "don't even bother, you won't get in here" that we got at several other schools we visited. Also, tuition is very reasonable compared to other schools. Out of state tuition for us won't be that much more than instate at our state university. Great school pride and spirit and very nice campus. Took a while to hear back after he applied, but he is really happy now.

USC made S's list for his desired major (Sports Management) and was highly recommended to him as a top 4 program by a sports Management Professor at another University.Once we started looking at it, we discovered his stats would get him at least the Cooper plus their generous NMF offer (called the Lieber Scholarship) plus admission to their Honors College. He was given the McNair after an application and interview process. He was also given departmental scholarships.
Like I'd Rather be SATing, S was attracted by the presence of Div1 SEC football and Coach Spurrier,we learned about southern hospitality by visiting and he liked the mix of small city/urban campus/bucolic historic setting.
We are not people who need the name of a supposedly higher tiered school. Its the reputation of the department you are interested in that is important.
S was admitted to and turned down U Miami (3/4ths scholarship) U Michigan (possibility of a named scholarship..cant remember the name..womans name?..he was called for the interview)U Mass/Amherst-school with the highest rep for his major and U of Florida (NMF merit award plus honors college).

I got into Duke, Emory, UNC, and UVA, and with a Carolina Scholarship (I get paid several thousand dollars to go here) USC was by far the best value. Emory and UNC were tempting, but I hope to go to medical school someday, and I don't believe that any of the other colleges would offer any type of advantage worth the money.

Plus, we have Spurrier.

We live in Virginia, but my son loves USC, he didn't even apply to UVA, but he did apply W&M and VT(as his backup). He loves USC, just applied to the other two in case he doesn't get any scholarships to USC (and the in-state status that comes with them). He will definitely be at USC if he gets any merit scholarships.

We loved the way they went out of their way to recruit us, and the campus is beautiful.

UVA and W&M are great schools, but they couldn't care less if you come or not since they have so many applicants. USC was like Avis, they tried harder, and it shows.

My son was attracted to the number-1 rated international business school. He wanted warmth and sunshine (as we live in upstate NY), an urban campus, and "big school" sports. When we visited last February, we were impressed by the campus and by our tour guide; both were particularly impressive. Other schools we visited were James Madison U, UNC, Wake Forest, and Clemson. South Carolina seems the best value and best overall for S's criteria.

IdRatherBeSATing ...
Tom Luginbill of Scouts Inc. just released the final revisions to the top ten before national signing day, S. Carolina is at #4.. Go Gamecocks!!!

Bearbear,

Great news for the *****! Thanks for sharing the article. However, I wish I could put more stock into these rankings. (Ricardo Hurley, 5 stars, rivals.com?) Also, only two thirds of Superior's first class is still with the team. Regardless, things are going to get very interesting in the SEC east when the gamecocks beat tennessee, florida, and georgia next year!

Apparently the USC mascot is a bad word and must be replaced by stars. . . .^

Just gotta use the whole name Gamecocks and then its OK!!!

LOL....have to admit it is somewhat disconcerting for ole dad to see his DD wearing a sweatshirt with four inch letters reading...Go *****.....LOL.....

amazing CC automatically edits.......I didn't know that....I had spelled out the word.....

LOL eadad
S walked off the plane here in NY at Winter Break wearing that same 4 inch size letters on a tee shirt ...oh what stares he was getting....

What other schools have offered acceptance but will be declined to go to Carolina? (goes without saying that any response that says "Clemson" will be highly suspect)

College of Charleston, North Greenville University accepted S, but he declined. Looking for a Computer Engineering Degree.

S won't hear from his other two schools until April (William and Mary and Va Tech). He did regular admission, so that's the normal notification date if the school doesn't do rolling admissions like USC.

In our case last year, D turned down Auburn Honors, UGA, Clemson, U of Oklahoma Honors, St.Louis U and Marquette (both w/significant merit $$) to accept at Carolina.

She absolutely loves Carolina and has never once regretted her decision.

S turned down (all with scholarships) U Miami,U Mass-Amherst,U Florida and U Michigan. All for Sports Management major.
After the McNair weekend, he wasnt going anywhere else no matter what the other schools offered him.

I haven't chosen USC yet...still have to visit it and a couple of other schools...but I can give you an idea of what attracted me to the school and what other schools I am considering.

What attracted me:
1) McNair & Lieber Scholarship Programs
2) South Carolina Honors College
3) The prospect of being able to live in apartments on the horseshoe (UVA has the lawn...but do you really want rooms that you have to walk outside to use the restroom?)
4) Reputation of the Moore School of Business, especially in Finance and International Business (two areas which I am considering majoring in)
5) Spurrier and SEC Sports
6) I was in Shreveport during the Independence Bowl weekend when the Gamecocks played Missouri and everyone I met from USC was so incredibly friendly
7) Everything I've heard about the school has been positive

Other schools I am considering: SMU, Miami (OH), TCU, Nebraska, UVA, Notre Dame

Georgia is pretty much out, and Indiana would have to give me a better offer than USC (which I don't think they can do) to be in contention. . . . Clemson didn't even deserve an application!
