Why USNA?

dad2b2010....as much as I want Shawna at USNA....there is a real chance that if there were MORE Shawna's walking the halls of our Harvards, Stanfords, Yales, etc...and MORE Shawna's proudly wearing their uniforms on these campuses...and MORE Shawna's rising to the top of their classes...and MORE Shawna's taking on their idiotic liberal professors with their brilliance, talents and rhetorical skills...than maybe we'd see a real change in the climate of these incredibly insulated and navel-focused schools....Hey, let's turn Harvard into a 'navAl-focused' school! Corny, but wouldn't that be a real dream come true.

Shawna...whatever you do, whereever you go, the school and the people will be privileged to have you.

I'd miss the thought of you at USNA...but I also think you may have a calling to Harvard for the reasons I've stated and if you choose that perilous route, you need all our support and praise!

let us know

LOL! You had me going there for a minute, Mom! :D

As for Harvard, we'd need a batallion of Shawnas inserted with air cover and fire support to make any impact on that God-forsaken piece of liberal heaven.

Of course you have a valid excuse for Shawna, Peskemom.

I just think USNA needs her for that Regimental or Brigade commander spot in 2010.

Then she can go to grad school at Harvard and whip some of those liberal chronies into shape with her superior leadership skills while soaking them for the good side of their knowledge.

Okay, I'm starting to fell like "family" so GO SHAWNA! Hey, get the Academy background like Dad2B'2010 says and THEN grad school at Harvard. All though the full assault Zaphod aluded to is always an option! GO my conservative compadres!

Not so fast....This dad can't even get up the gumption to tell his own son the same thing! Go figure....

Ah yes, the pleasures of parenthood! Thing is I have an 8th grade boy who says he is bound and determined to also go to the Academy! Lord help me survive!

Haha, thanks guys...you are too nice. You haven't lost me yet, but Harvard definitely has a hook in me...

Peskemom, what you said is exactly what I've been thinking...and Zaphod, I'm almost insulted that you doubt my ability to start a revolution on campus! It's okay. You know, even if we go full assault, you have to start somewhere...you need a few brave souls to lead the attack. Maybe I could pave the way for future generations.

On a side note though, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it isn't the anti-military hostile atmosphere that you all seem to think it is. When I visited Harvard over my last vacation, I was expecting it to be like that...but it wasn't. Even the ROTC kids say they rarely encounter opposition. Most non-ROTC students are either indifferent or very curious. That's not to say that hostility isn't there at all...but come on, that could be fun: taking on some psychos and making them look like idiots.

Then again, Dad2B's idea is what gives me a knot in my stomach when I think about NOT going to USNA...how did you know that I wanted to be Brigade Commander? Lol.

I'll keep you posted; thanks for all of your support!

shawna

Oh, I don't doubt your ability to start one, I just doubt any single person's ability to MAINTAIN it! ;)

Just go wherever you feel you can develope to become the best officer to lead our nations men and women into battle. Some people excel better at the academy, some from ROTC. Both make good officers however you have to know which atmosphere will be better for you.

Hello all, sorry its taken me so long to find this thread!! Wheeler everything you have to say is right on...I have feeling though that perhaps ive been at the academy a year or two longer than you, so I wanna give an upperclass opinion on this subject if you dont mind. like wheeler said women at the academy all deserve the utmost respect (not to toot my own horn or anything). and there are still a LOT of problems at the academy as far as gender equality goes. however, if your female is strong enough to stand up for herself and not tolerate inappropriate behavior, then she will be fine. i do have to say however that it is when a female stands up for herself that the majority of the comments and harrassment start. as in, you come forward to report someone and then you are labeled a "guy hater" or several other words that are not proper for this site. But if you raised your daughter, as im sure you have, to stand up for is right, she will be fine and there are others like her here like wheeler and I that will be there to support her. Also, expanding on wheelers comment about the second class saying there are two kinds of women at the academy "b****** and hoes" it needs to be emphasized that not all sexual harrassment comes from the males. i would estimate that up to like 30% or sexual harrassing (is that word) comments come from females referring to other females. there is a HUGE issue of jealousy and competition here at the academy. some girls get angry if you try to hang out with the same group of guys they do. however not ALL females are like this. there are a few. just like in high school or at any other college, females can be mean...meaner than guys...all im saying is that stick to your guns, and dont let things slide because you are scared to **** people off. im not saying to cry wolf, but be a the strong female that I know you are if you are coming to this school....ok as far as wearing a uniform and still looking a pretty haha, if you came here to get a guy then you are barking up the wrong tree, but yes you can wear a uniform and still look feminine. my advice would be to stay away from the skirts though. i dont know why exactly but guys and some girls look down upon the skirt, mostly because plebes dont have to chop when they wear it so it looks like they are slacking off...ok next topic, dating a midshipman. i know that the alumni are going to tell people DONT DATE ANOTHER MIDSHIPMAN!! haah but the fact is about 80% of women that go to the academy end up marrying another mid. sorry guys but its the truth. i currently am dating a midshipman and we plan on getting engaged in the next couple of months. you will face several male midshipman that say "i will NEVER date a mid girl" and that dating one is called "slaying" or "going to the dark side". dont let this bother you, but dont come here looking for a guy. if it happens, it happens. hehe ok this is long enough..i hope that helps!

Shawna, you DO realize that you're leaving me and Janell (<a href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20050723/news_m1m23tfcamp.html)%5B/url%5D">http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20050723/news_m1m23tfcamp.html)</a>, right? tsk tsk tsk Just kidding!

Good luck on making your choice. Remember, God has all the answers, and praying is a nice way to get them.

I'll take it one step further.

You don't have to wear a uniform to serve or make a difference. Think about it.

Go where your heart and dreams tell you to go, then kick ass when you get there!

Wow. THAT I'd never heard of. Interesting...

Oh, and I NEVER heard another mid use the "two kinds of women" comment. I'd have handed him his ass for it, because I was friends with quite a few of those he would have been disparaging.

I'll give you my reasoning for this. It's worth precisely what you paid for it.

There is an old saying (edited, of course), "Don't excrete where you eat". Truer words were never spoken, especially in the civilian world.

I found this out the VERY, VERY, HARD WAY, and not at USNA. Yes, it's true Mids date each other, and there's really nothing wrong with that (I did it, too, believe it or not), but it brings a whole pile of risks (mostly emotional, but they can become professional) that you need to consider.

I will acknowledge that my experience (which is fairly recent, BTW) may have me jaded, and that my means of dealing with the possibility of it happening again is simply to recoil from it and recommend the same to anyone who will listen, but the fact remains that these folks are locked together for extended periods, going through things only others going through them can understand, and that makes matches a natural thing. They just need to know what can go wrong if it doesn't work, and act accordingly.

There was more than one young lady at USNA that I would have loved to date seriously, but I was very, very shy back then (now I just don't give a damn anymore, one way or the other). All previous posts aside, and all other things being equal, I'd pick a USXA girl over a Podunk U girl any day of the week and three times on Tuesday.

just make sure the person who made the "two kinds of women" comment...was a female...

You're kidding!

Good grief. What a tool.

dictatoranna ..what san diego union tribune link are you referring you?
And if Shawna does decide to go Harvard....you ladies in your gorgeous mid uniforms can sometimes visit HER to support her there, you know...especially once you're past Plebe year.

Hm. The link was working the other day. It was just an article with Janell talking about NASS and had a photo of her jump-roping. (No, I ain't a stalker, ya'll.)

Not a bad idea about visiting Shawna, though...that is, if she decides to begin a revolt at Harvard. Watching V for Vendetta reminds me of my love of rebellions.

Dictatoranna....here is the link...but they don't post the photo anymore.
