Why UVA is the best!

My sister is a 4th year at UVA and she recently found this quote from ESPN magazine! Thought some of you would like to read this.

"Just about every other school in Virginia likes to bash UVA kids for
being 'pretentious' and 'snobs.' In other words, they get called out for
thinking they're better than everyone else. Well, if you went to the
school in Virginia with the most stringent admissions requirements, best
overall athletic program, most beautiful campus and coeds, most
successful and famous alumni, the most storied social scene, was founded
by Thomas Jefferson, and all that happened to be in what was voted the

1 city to live in America, well you'd think you were the **** too."

ESPN's review of college campuses.

that makes me feel great.

wish i could find the article. i'll look for it online

A lot of that is true. It doesn't have the most competitive admissions requirements, but oh well. And who cares what people at other schools in VA think? The only other good ones are W&M, Richmond, and W&L. The rest suck.

^^ Good thing you mentioned UR, otherwise I would have had to ____ you. UR is the only school I've been accepted to thus far. Still waiting to hear from UVA but at the rate I'm going, it's not looking so good.

UR probably isn't as good as the other three I mentioned, but it's still a fine school with a great campus. My grandfather attended Richmond as an undergraduate when he got back from WW2. My grandparents still live within a few minutes of the campus in a very beautiful neighborhood.

I agree -- not ranked nearly as high as UVA or W & L -- won't argue with you on that one.

Just found out I got into UVA, so now I have to decide between UR and UVA.

If you're not getting any financial aid, I think your choice is clear, worldshopper.

If finances were not a consideration, where would you go in all honesty?

Most people would pick UVA.

UVA is seen as being better (and is) and probably has a little bit more going on socially. Not that Richmond isn't a great school, but it's a solid notch below UVA. This isn't like comparing UVA and W&M. It's more like comparing UVA and MIT (although we'll pretend that MIT has a social aspect and more than a handful of "normal" students.)

And the people who pick UR over UVA do so because of the smaller size and what else?

And nothing, really, besides maybe scholarship money. UVA is generally the cheaper of the two and takes a higher cut of students than Richmond. The smaller size of Richmond isn't as big of an advantage as you'd think, either.

However, I will say that they're both excellent options and you should pick whichever makes you happiest.

^^ Why is the smaller size of UR not that big of an advantage? Or are you saying that it's smaller size doesn't make up for the overall advantages of going to UVA?

I'm saying that UVA is larger, but it doesn't feel like a giant school. It's a midsized public university with a large endowment. "Small" isn't always an advantage. It's just something different.

a decision between UVa and University of Richmond is a no brainer.

UVa easily wins.

Your comment is based partly on the fact that you go there?

From turkeytalk.blogspot.com, the quote came from a guest spot with the UVa alum and sexy-results.blogspot.com writer Ian Cohen

5 Questions with UVA blogger Ian Cohen

"With the VT/UVA clash approaching tomorrow, pro-Cavalier blog Sexy Results author Ian Cohen and I decided to run through a few exchanges in words in looking at the highly anticipated game. Here are his words, and you can check out mine here.

......

TT: Lastly, give an overall prediction on Saturday's matchup, and I'm dying to know, what do YOU guys REALLY think about VT?

SR: See my most recent post for predictions. I'm hoping against hope here, seeing as how the last time someone named Vick manned the controls, it wasn't even close. In fact, I'm guessing there's a better chance that VT wins by 30 than there is of them winning by 3.

As for what we think about Tech, I'd say it's a cocktail composed of equal parts indifference and pity. Indifference because nearly everyone at UVA had the chance to get accepted to and attend Tech or anywhere else in Virginia, and chose not to. Pity because other people didn't have that option, and spend their first year trying to get their grades up instead of partying so we'll accept their transfer applications.

Just about every other school in Virginia, save for W&L, likes to bash UVA kids for being "pretentious" and "snobs." In other words, we get called out for thinking we're better than everyone else. Well, if you went to the school in Virginia with the most stringent admissions requirements, best overall athletic program, most beautiful campus and coeds, most successful and famous alumni, the most storied social scene, was founded by Thomas Jefferson, and all that happened to be in what was voted the #1 city to live in America, you'd think you were the **** too."

I really hope that they gave him proper credit for such a brilliant quote.

Worldshopper, its really is a no brainer. How could you take UR over UVA on any basis? Send in your acceptance form now!

Just a bit concerned about the sizes of classes at UVA. I'm going to do an overnight at UVA and then make my final decison.

wish i had that option... waitlisted at uva, accepted at U of R but hardly able to afford it. :-/
