Hiya fellow UVA hopefuls,

If you hadn't noticed, UVA doesnt have a "Why UVA" supplement. However, I wanted to see the reasons why everyone is attracted to the school. Tell us what attracts you to UVA and why.

Enjoy

Hiya fellow UVA hopefuls,

If you hadn't noticed, UVA doesnt have a "Why UVA" supplement. However, I wanted to see the reasons why everyone is attracted to the school. Tell us what attracts you to UVA and why.

Enjoy

cost, academics, location

Those are good reasons.

maybe a little conceited…but prestige???

As much as I hate to put myself into the category of “prestige-whore”, I so agree Eagles. However, I believe the prestige comes along in the package UVA offers. Of course it is going to be prestigious because everything is so excellent about the school.

because its perfect. Once i saw UVA everything else just didnt compare. Its gorgeous, its in the south, friendly people, great town, great rep, excellent opportunities, and I could just see myself fitting in there.

I lived there for most of my life. Moved from India to Cville at the age of 4, and I moved out in 10th grade. I want to go back haha… That says a lot. A lot of people that LIVE there complain that Cville is really boring. And I agreed with them, until I moved. I live in Roanoke, VA now, and I want to go back.

The top reasons to go? Well, for one Thomas Jefferson was a total baller

Ok for real now. My father worked there for most of his career in the US, and he took me to his labs and stuff, and I went to the hospitals there when I got injured, and I did a few summer camps there when I was a child. I played tennis in their courts, I swam in the Aquatic Fitness Center, and most importantly, I talked to many of the professors in my childhood. I still do. The fact that I know many professors who teach there made the biggest impact, they’re all WONDERFUL people!

UVA has a really calm and serene feel to it. It’s pleasant to actually walk to class, unlike some campuses at other colleges. The mild temperatures, nothing too extreme (although this Winter has been hectic in Virginia) are definitely a great aspect of UVA. Plenty of trees around, so you get a very natural feel, even though buildings are mostly brick and glass.

The tuition to UVA is extremely generous for those in-state. Even for out-of-state, 30,000 for UVA’s academic prowess is quite fair in my opinion.

All sporting events are free for UVA students, even though the football team isn’t the best hahaha…

I can’t think of any more reasons, probably 'cause I am studying for my midterms while writing this.

Not an Ivy but the tier below academically, which allows for more free time. Compared to Ivies, the cost is cheap. Its in the south, sports, people, town, not a lot of kids from my school go there, beautiful campus.

That is classic. I got accepted to BC but I would dread going there because SO many kids from my school attend. Don’t get me wrong, BC is a FANTASTIC school, but I couldn’t imagine myself at a school with the same kids four more years.

One of the best public schools in the nation

QuestBridge partnership means I’ll get good financial aid if accepted

Great academics that aren’t too stressful (you’ll be able to do more than just study)

Great sports for the academic caliber of the school

Campus is amazing

etc.

One thing people have yet to mention, which is probably the most important factor for me is the community at UVA. The people there are SO nice. I know a plethora of grads and am just shocked by their love for the school and their kindness. I’m constantly stopped on the train and asked by alums if I go to UVA (Rep’in the UVA Hoodie of course). The people at UVA LOVE the school.

Also, echols scholar program is one of the most unique honors programs and is perfectly tailored to my learning style. if I get in I really really hope I get echols

“I would dread going there because SO many kids from my school attend”

haha Uva or bust i totally agree…alot of people from my school go to Bucknell and i applied there as one of my safetys, but now that so many people got in i would rather go anywhere else but there! And sorry if I sound snobby, I’m not trying to be its still a great school

So this is going to be an all-encompassing answer since I’m a little too in love with UVa :P.

I’m a third-year and absolutely love UVa. That’s saying a lot, because it was far from my dream school; in fact, I think it was one of the last I added onto my list. I started getting more interested after I got in and did more research, asking around, etc and kept hearing such great things about it.

Community - I lived internationally at the time, and am still out-of-state, but I don’t have a single regret about going to UVa. It is literally more home for me now than any of my “hometowns”…I think what UVAorBust said is spot on. We have a wonderful community, it’s a fantastic mix of people, of academics and social life, of everything really…I know very few people who aren’t happy there. I’m involved in a lot of activities at UVa and most of my friends are too - students love being involved and there are a thousand different clubs, activities, and other organizations which allow you to find something you’re interested in. This kind of spirit makes the school spirit.

Academics - are fantastic. I’ve had very few professors I haven’t liked or at least learned a lot from, and many of them are experts in their field and have done remarkable things. They are also for the most part very eager to help students and willing to talk, even in large lecture classes.

Grounds - BEAUTIFUL campus that goes through all four seasons. I’ve been at UVa two and a half years now and I still every few weeks just stop in my tracks and wonder at how beautiful the grounds around me are. It makes a big difference to be in an environment that feels and looks nice…it has a wonderful campus feel, it’s not at all over-urbanized, you feel like you’re at college and getting the classic traditional experience.

Tradition - there’s a lot of it. You can feel the history (obviously Thomas Jefferson left his mark!) and it makes you feel like you’re part of something important and long-lasting. And there are a lot of insider traditions you’ll learn once you’re there :P.

Social life - I already touched on this with community, but it’s so easy to get to know so many people; even though it seems like a relatively sizeable school, I walk around the dining halls (which aren’t bad btw) and still recognize people constantly. Everyone knows how to to work hard, but also have fun.

Bottom line: this wasn’t my dream school when I applied. It is now. I think the school really does choose you - I would not have been happy at some of the schools I thought I wanted to go to; UVa has the perfect mix of hard-working people who still want to have fun, and want to help each other - for the most part, you avoid the cutthroat competition. It’s a beautiful place and I absolutely love it here - hopefully those coming in will too! It’s really made me who I am now.

Ash snow - You hit the nail on the head.
