Most classes fall and winter terms meet either Monday, Wed, and Fri for an hour or Tue and Thur for two hours. Spring term you take half the classes but double the time.

Next year we're going to have a new schedule of bells which is going to be a little strange - they're giving us 10 minutes between classes instead of 5 now as with construction of the new music/art building complete, people's classes are going to be farther apart. You can find the new schedule on the website.

Why do they do the bell thing? Does it feel like high school? Are all classes in the mornings/early afternoons or are evening classes available?

Also, do many kids participate in the work program? Are they looked down upon because they work on campus?

The bells aren't like high school bells, the end bell is the big bell on Washington Hall and the start bell is just the hour bell on Lee Chapel, which rings anyway (I'm not what will happen next year with the new schedule). They're more like church bells than class bells. It also makes yet another connection with Washington and Lee - with the Lee (Chapel) bell ringing five minutes after the Washington (Hall) bell.

If any of you are interested in a fun bit of history - you may want to take a gander at this - and it may help explain the bells as well. Bells have been used in history to welcome and to disperse - to commemorate and to signal. If you are going to W&L - you need to have some idea of the little historical ditties there - some are fun

I know your son went to W&L and loved it. May I ask where in New England you live, and if you can answer unbiased to W&L, how well known is W&L in your area?

We love Washington and Lee also, but want our D to go to a school that is also well known. I am sure W&L will win out for numerous other reasons, but she got into BC also, and it definately is more well known.

Also, your S graduated in 2000, I think you said in a previous post. Did he go on to grad school, if so what kind and how is he doing now?

Please don't answer anything you don't want to, we just want good input into this big decision for our D.

My D will be attending W&L this fall. I am originally from NE. I never heard of W&L until I was in college in PA and some glossy about colleges/unis across the country was put in our mailboxes on a weekly basis. W&L was in the news a bit back then because they were going co-ed. I always thought my sister should apply there because she could have been in the first class with women.

Flash forward to now: MY mother works at a independent girl's days school in the greater Boston area and several girls got in W&L. I think it's getting a broader, national reputation although it is REALLY SOUTHERN (not that that's a bad thing). D had a great time during the visit and is looking forward to the Accepted Students Day.

I will try to be as unbiased as I can be - this is a little bit of comparing apples to oranges - big vs small - in some ways. W&L is pretty well known in these parts - every time it is mentioned there is a very positive response - highly regarded - and knowing several older - ahem - W&L grads - who have been very successful in their chosen fields - there was NO doubt the why and where our son wanted to go.

We live on Cape Cod - small community - but very very close to an area that has one of the highest concentrations of PhD's - believe it or not LOL - on the east coast. Over a 4 year period - our little high school had 3 students attend - all different - different concentrations/interests - all had great experiences there and have moved on to excellent situations/careers.

The differences between W&L and BC are many - 2 different worlds one might say - one being a small school - rural - very personal and close knit community - vs - a bigger school in the General Boston area - very rara these days as well. Each has it's own pros and cons and will definitely provide a great education - no matter which way you cut the cake. Big city vs rural setting - hard to make a comparison. One of the biggest reasons W&L would be preferred - in our eyes - was the very personnal attention that W&L students experience. The students we know from W&L STILL have a very good relationship with their profs and contacts from W&L.

Yes - my son did go to grad school - actually it came looking for him LOL. He went to U of Ill -Urbana/Champaign and UNH as well. In his chosen field he is doing quite well. ALL of his friends - who are also his frat brothers and his best high school friend (who also went to W&L) are doing quite well. One a chem prof at a mid-western U - Phd. - one to Wall Street and grad school - Stanford - one to Wash DC - high power finance - one to Officers Training/Air Force pilot - 2 to 1st/2nd choice med school............. actually every single friend from W&L is doing very well/very successful.

One of the things that my son considered in finding the 'right' school was - his wanting to be recoginized - in your face type guy - wanted that very personnal touch that W&L definitely has. BC was in the running for awhile - but found it too big - not as personnal - alot of distractions. Being an athlete also - he wanted to be able to participate in his sport - and felt that W&L would be a much better oppprtunity for him - again D1 vs D3 - different attitudes towards athletes also.

When it finally came down to applying to schools - W&L was actually the ONLY one he actively applied to!!! ED - immediately after he spent a weekend on campus to check it out. I was amazed when we went to move-in weekend - that the freshman Dean at the time knew who he was!!

I don't know where you are from - but I honestly feel that W&L is name recognized where it counts - highly reguarded school with unique opportunities - and no lack of generating highly sought after students for grad school.

Do you mind me asking what major your D is considering?? One thing that I also noted was that there is no lack of connections/net-workikng at W&L - as I am sure is the the same at BC. My question would be for you tho is - what are your D's preferences in all of this. What are her gut feelings about each school. What type of an atmosphere is her preference - this may answer itself.

I am sure tho that your D will be successful at either school. If there is anything else I can help with - I will try my best.

Thanks for responding. My D is considering journalism which I know is wonderful at W&L. I just know she may very well change her mind and I want her to be in a place where there is a lot to choose from.

My husband is a UNH grad by the way. We live in the South now, but we are not southerners. My husband is from the east and I am from the west. Our S goes to college in New England.

My D has made up her mind for the most part, and wants to go to W&L. It just is not as clear cut for us, but that is ok. I know the personal attention is there at W&L, and that is very important to us. But she is the type that will get the attention wherever she goes.
