I heard they had 20 percent decline in aps and the acceptance rate was practically near 40 percent for early decision. Will this be a trend for Duke in the RD round?

I'm doubting the 20% decline will hold for RD.. I think that there will be a similar amount of people in the RD round and a lot of them are going to apply to Duke even if its not their first choice... acceptance rate shouldn't go up that much overall.

does everyone agree that the 20% drop was largely due to the scandal?

I agree with that - it was probably a turnoff for a lot of people who weren't sure whether they would apply ED in the first place. Once the scandal came out, they probably just decided to try something else or wait for RD.

Other schools had drops too. Yale was down 13% and Rice was down 15%.

Don't expect a 40% acceptance rate to hold in RD

Probably the acceptance rate is going to go down to about 25% (20% last year?).. but I would be surprised if its higher than that.

Finally many people (who wouldn't consider applying ED to Duke.. due to the scandal, etc) will still apply RD even if they really don't have that strong of an interest in Duke.

So I predict that the RD drop in applications will be AT MOST 10%...

If this is so, and assuming the same number of people are accepted RD...
The overall acceptance rate for Duke would be 24%, if RD Apps drop 10%.

I might as well show what happens if the fallout of RD is the same as ED, assuming the same number of applicants are accepted ED & RD.

(465+ 3633)/ (19386*.8)= 26.4%.
A pretty steep drop, but far from a 40% acceptance rate.

Same number are not accepted ED as RD. I think it's more like 1/3 are ED and the rest are RD. I can't remember what the exact ratio is.

the admissions officers said that about a fourth of the rising class is accepted ED.

yeah, i think 465 students were accepted early, and there's about 1600 in the freshmen class?

It was said that the admission stats are comparable though. Do you believe this?

i think so. i also think the class of 2007 is more competitive than ever as well

This is good news.

"This is good news."

Not if you aren't a competitive applicant.
