Why was I deferred from Florida State University?

Hi, last night I found out that I was deferred from FSU. One of my friends got accepted, even though she is in lower-level classes than me, has no APs, and got a 20 on her ACT. I’m confused as to why I got deferred because I meet all of the academic requirements. If anyone is able to give me advice as to why I was deferred then I would really appreciate it! I’m really interested in this school and would like to do whatever I can in order to get accepted in March.

Weighted GPA: 3.93
Unweighted GPA: 3.4
ACT: 30 (Average ACT for FSU according to Naviance is a 25)
Major: Interior Design
Out of state (from New Jersey)
Ethnicity: White
One year of JV sport, one year of Varsity
Involved with 3 clubs since freshman year
I work as a law secretary, have an addition job over the summer
I only have 1 AP (which I have an A in), but all my other classes are accelerated. I got a few C’s freshman and sophomore year, but I haven’t since. I know those C’s may be a contributing factor but I thought FSU would appreciate my incline in grades, since I’ve had all As and Bs junior and senior year.

My guess would be the Cs, although your ACT should help compensate. I’ve read that Cs and Ds are red flags for FSU and a lot of people with them are deferred and/or rejected despite having other strong components in their applications. Definitely make sure you finish this semester strongly so you can send in a great mid-year transcript. Other than that, I’m not sure what else you can do bedsides demonstrating interest and keeping in touch with your admissions counselor. Best of luck and don’t give up hope!

Call fsu maybe they miscalculated your grades they give you a reason why you were deferred

I got deferred as well.

I’m signed up to take the next SAT. If I get at least a 1650-1700, what are my chances of getting accepted on March 12th?

Did you express in your essay your desire to go to Florida State? I was recently accepted with only a 29 ACT and similar GPA, out of state,and I have one C from my sophomore year. I did express my interest in FSU as it was my second choice university and I was given a partial out of state tuition reduction. Keep up your grades and send in a letter outlining your desire to attend FSU (even if it isn’t your top choice) and you should have a pretty good chance, obviously your ACT scores and GPA are high enough as it is, so maybe they felt you were their safety school. Best of luck!!

@tannerkubarek

FSU has a minimum SAT subscore requirement.

Your ACT is high enough (did you take the writing portion?) and I know FSU considers the scores that make you look best, but maybe getting your SAT writing above 500 would tip things toward acceptance.

@samanthahems

You have four things not in your favor:

• Your weighted GPS is in the bottom 50% for FSU
• With only 1 AP you do not have the course rigor that most of the in-state applicants have (my assumption)
• You had a few Cs. While you have a good grade incline, the lack increased course rigor may not be enough. Getting a A in your AP course should help. Have they asked you to submit first semester grades?
• You are OOS. FSU received over 30,000 applications in 2014 and probably received even more this year. FSU is a popular choice in-state (it is not just for those that did not get into UF) so there are a lot of qualified applicants, sometimes it is just a numbers thing.

I am surprised your friend got in with a 20 ACT since that is below FSU’s minimum. Does any of the below apply to her:

@CaucAsianDad

Thank you for that! My writing must be horrible. I looked at my scores again and my Writing score on my ACT was only a 17. I have no idea why I can’t write on standardized tests for my life. It’s nothing like school writing. I’m going to have to study like crazy. So, if I get at least a 500 subscore on the next SAT, I should have a good shot at admission? Thanks!

All your other stats look good. Concentrate on improving the writing (either SAT or ACT) and you will be competitive.

A weighted 3.93 GPA is in the bottom 50% at FSU?

I was estimating based on the following:

Sorry, I missed by 0.01, but I bet I am correct for 2015 - 2016.

From the 2014-2014 FSU Common Data Set:

I doubt C’s are the sole issue. I got multiple D’s freshman year and still got in. Course rigor was probably a bit lower than average if only one AP was taken.

Thank you for all of your help, I studied hard for the writing portion of the SAT like you said, did well, and got in.

Congratulations :slight_smile:

Congratulations! That is a big improvement.
