I applied to St. John's PharmD program (Queens) and got deferred. My stats:

96 GPA
2 APs, rest are honors
32 ACT
360 hours of community service

OK recs

Now, I know people with lower stats than mine who got accepted. Why me? I wasn't even worried about getting in this school b/c I was very confident. Does my deferral just mean that they've filled up their early action seats? Or does it mean I don't qualify for the program?

Also, will my chances of being accepted regular decision be affected due to the fact that I was deferred? In other words, will the admissions counselors see that I was deferred and will that take away my chances of being accepted?

Being deferred does not negatively impact your RD chance.

You were probably just borderline. There are a lot of good applicant in the EA pools. Schools can’t fill up on EA applicants; they can only take the best.

But it’s not like they said “This kid is great! but wait, the spots are filled already.” Probably more along the lines of “This kid is okay, but there are too many EA applicants that are better.”

If you truly didn’t qualify, you would have been rejected (in most cases anyway).

Based on my stats, do you think I might get in? I know people with 85 GPAs and 31 ACTs who got in. Also, if I do get in will I get lower scholarship just because I was deferred and just because I’m getting my decision for regular decision?

If by “scholarship” you mean need-based financial aid, then I think it won’t make a difference. If you mean merit aid, the lion’s share is likely to go to the very strongest candidates.

I meant merit based. But do you think my stats are good enough for a good scholarship? Again, people with lower stats than me have gotten full tuition scholarships to this school.

That’s odd. My friend got a $17k scholarship with a 31 ACT and 91 weighted gpa. Are there any red flags on your app? On the bright side, you probably have a fantastic shot at RD, and if you were in fact borderline for whatever reason, I’m sure you’ll get pushed into the acceptance pile considering people get in with MUCH lower stats.

Yes, my 96 was weighted. UW is around a 93.

And no, no red flags at all. Everything was perfect. I don’t recall even one thing on my app that could have negatively affected me. I really hope I do get in RD. Do they give lower scholarships to deferred and/or RD people?

We can’t help you. Why don’t you call the college and speak with someone in the admission’s dept.

The Pharm. program is competitive. Perhaps your HS curriculum lacked rigor compared to that of other applicants trying to get into the pharm. program? You mentioned that you only took 2 AP classes. Were they AP classes appropriate for someone pursuing a science based program in college? Did you take AP Chem? Did you take AP Calc?
Did you send your midyear grades?

Speak with someone in the admission’s office. Try to get an idea from them as to what type of info would boost your chances of gaining acceptance since being deferred into the regular decision pool? Speaking directly with someone from the admission’s dept. will show them that you have a strong interest in the school.

Regarding the other people you know who were accepted: Were they accepted into the Pharm. program?

Thank you for the reply. Yes, I have contacted the people in the admissions department via phone and email. Actually, the people who have gotten in were on this site. One particular person has lower grades than me, but a higher ACT score (only by a few points); this person also had taken only 2 APs. And yes, they were PharmD applicants.

I have also sent in my midyear report. I guess I just have to wait now.
