I have a 34 act and top 5 %. Why was I deferred?
Tulane loves interest and I think lots of good students use it as a safety with merit. Same last year, look at tons of top stats essentially rejected who wouldn’t have attended anyway in old threads. Are you auto admit to Texas schools? I can’t imagine that you would pick Tulane over UT fro example, and I would imagine Tulane would know that too.
Tulane and UT are very different schools in very different places. There would be very good reasons to pick either one. Different strokes for different folks!
Last year we saw this too - kids with high stats getting deferred. The thinking is that Tulane doesn’t want to be used as a safety school so if you haven’t shown much interest, that may be why.
This is not unique to Tulane, btw. Tufts was the first school to be highly identified for this. It even took on the name “Tufts Syndrome”. WUSTL is another. I am sure there are more.

Sure, but this isn’t about folks, it is about why a school might reject a qualified candidate. Tulane might be able to garner a ton of 29-31 top 20% kids who will pay money, the OP’s ilk will be looking for merit and Tulane would have to be unnecessarily generous to compete for a UT auto admit. I would bet money that kid’ from a state with no fabulous in state schools might be considered differently.
The same thing happened to me!! (2220 sat, 3.9 gpa) but a kid from my school with a higher gpa and lower sat (4.0, 2160) and the same course load (10 ap’s by the end of graduation) was accepted with a 30k scholarship even though he showed no interest! i also didnt show any interest though and was deferred. why did he get in but not me?
A friend with a 35 ACT and 4.0 unweighted 4.6 weighted got rejected last year.
Tufts’ Syndrome?
I agree. They are protecting their yield. Make it very clear to them that you will attend if you get an offer and I’m sure one will come. Even more sure if you have your guidence counselor call. That puts the name of your high school behind your promise. It’s a Tuft Syndrome thing!
Today i was deferred with a 34 ACT and 4.0 Uw GPA
It definitely makes me feel better that Tulane has a rep for this
Interest generally can include a very specific Why Tulane essay. My S with high stats wrote about the TIDES program allowing him to continue running while learning about the city around him, which is pretty cool.
If you ignored the essay or blew it off with general stuff, then the figure you didn’t bother, why should they.
Yes!! That is exactly the point. Tulane is doing what is best for them (and btw I think best for the student most of the time as well but that is another story), and it is absolutely not personal and should not be a blow to anyone’s ego, although I know it feels exactly that way. The whole point is that these students are going to get into schools harder to get into than Tulane, and in 90% of the cases, schools they want to attend more than Tulane. I am sure Tulane doesn’t get it right 100% of the time, but I would bet on the other number. Besides, by deferring rather than denying admission, they give the 10% that they may have gotten wrong 4 months to make that clear.
Yes. It actually used to be listed in Wikipedia that way, but they have changed the title to Yield Protection. But look at the title of the only reference cited.

@anonemuss I was also deferred. I have a 33 ACT and I am also top 5% of my class. The rejection really stung, but it’s nice to know that this is common and I’m not alone.
Not a rejection, but it kind of proves the point.
I know a male student who was rejected last year with a 2250 SAT and top 10% of competitive HS. Turns out he totally skipped the OPTIONAL Why Tulane essay, which really is not optional if you want to be accepted. It’s kind of a weeder. On the other end of the spectrum, I know another male student from the same HS with a 3.2 GPA, 30 ACT who wa accepted outright.
I mention that they were male because it’s my understanding that males have a bit of an edge in Tulane admissions.
I imagine they do, even if slight. Like universities nationally, Tulane has been about 57% female each of the last 5-7 incoming classes. Surprisingly, this doesn’t seem to have been as much of an issue as I thought it would be.
Another reason could be due to the fact they cannot give out merit offers to all the tippy top students. Merit is obviously limiting. So Tulane has to be selective and try to figure out who is really serious about attending Tulane. That’s where the interest plays a big part… visiting definitely helps and completing the optional essay, etc. Also, its about FIT - Tulane wants a student that fits their culture too. So it isn’t just all about stats. It’s the whole package. If you are seriously interested in Tulane reach out to the admissions team and let them know and send in mid year grades, additional information, etc. Good luck!
UGH ME TOO! I was SHOCKED. I have a 3.9 (unweighted) and a 33 (ACT), which according to Naviance, are the highest scores and GPA ever applied from my MA high school. (I don’t know if your school has Naviance, but it shows your school’s past history with a college/what scores were accepted). I had a stellar essay and awesome recommendation letters. Anyway, I applied like the last day for EA and was deferred. Nine people from my school have applied and all I have heard are acceptances so far. But, thing is, I showed no interest, unlike the other applicants, and applied later. I think they could tell it was a safety.
Any advice on how my deferred could turn into an acceptance? It is a serious choice for me (not truly #1), but a top choice. Is it necessary to visit now?
UGH I AM SO ANGRY. I feel all your pain.
I was accepted ED to washu, so tulane is no longer an option for me. To all you other deferred folks, keep your heads high and try to schedule a visit or get on their email list so you can know when they have events around your area. Also email them and say that you would attend if admitted.
Here once again is the advice from admissions on how to proceed now. http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2011/12/ive-been-deferred-now-what.html
I will say that my own interpretation of your post is that you come across as egotistical and entitled. I am not saying you are IRL, but look at what you are saying. You think that because you have high stats, that’s enough that a school like Tulane should just fall at your feet, especially since they took these other “lesser” students. Yet you go on to admit that you applied last second, and that it was probably obvious you are using them as a safety. But you are SO ANGRY. Why? Because they put the interest of the school and the incoming class first, which is to have students that really want to be there, and not those feeling like they had to “settle” because they really wanted Harvard or Brown or Duke but didn’t get into those schools? Maybe taking a step back and thinking about all that for a bit would help?
Congrats on WUSTL!! Fantastic school, I know it very well. I am sure you will love it.
