Why was I deferred?!

I found out online today that I was deferred at Northeastern University. These are my stats:

College: College of Arts and Sciences
Major: Journalism
From: Minneapolis, MN, suburb public high school
GPA: 3.5 UW*
ACT: 30
ECs: Newspaper editor, creator of school newspaper Web site, etc.

I have an huge upward trend. My sophomore year's GPA was 3.0 with no APs (I didn't try at all), then my junior year I took many APs in every subject and finished the year with close to a 3.9 GPA UW. This year, I am taking four more APs as well as honors' and college courses, and first quarter I got a 3.9 GPA.

My letter said that I will just be put in with the regular admissions pool and that they want to see my midterm grades. Everyone I talked to said Northeastern was definite safety for me--what gives? Should I be worried?

WHY??????? i thought i would get in piece of cake..

dude you definitely got gipped. My friend with insane credentials (high 90's GPA) got deferred from SUNY Stonybrook (a freakin almost commuter school). I really don't get what colleges are looking for this year. It's really wierding me out. My scores arent as high as yours and you didnt get in. I definitely think somethin went wrong there. But i wouldn't stress you shuold definitely get in regular

i got rejected from northeastern and accepted into BC and Babson. crazy.

I got deferred from BU's CGS program, ED nonetheless in addition to being deferred from UChicago. Admissions really are a crazy game, you should've gotten in. My stats were much lower than yours.

asian - american [filipino] currently a junior at Long Island, NY public high school.

GPA: 3.7 [raised from a 3.3 from freshman year]

ranking: top 20% of 350
SAT I: 1690 [m:520, v: 590, w: 580]

SAT IIs: world history - 620, us history - 590, math - 520
[i think i shouldn't include these on my app.]

APs: World History [4], US History & Enlgish Lang [3 - ehh?], Psychology, English Lit, European History, Economics [next year]

college courses: french [6 credits], pre calc [6 credits]

courseload: was in all academic classes in 9th grade but was bumped to honors classes in science, history, and english in 10th grade. weak in math and bio [because they're not honors classes, but still recieved high grades]. great in chem and physics. history and english - no less than 90 every year. band all 4 years [playing two instruments - flute & oboe]

EC: Varsity tennis [conference champs], varsity track [conference champs], honor society, volunteer tutoring, NYSSMA participant [music festival which i'm graded, have scored very well], volunteer assistant teaching on handicapped kids CCD. [catholic, outside of school activity]

awards: Spirit Award in Band [freshman and soph. year]

i have no idea why i was deferred! i only applyed to CAS though, but ughh this made me so angry. if i get rejected in april, i'll cry.

Maybe they think you think of them as a safety? And if you act very concerned about the deferment (is that a word...?) and like you care about getting in, they'll admit you? Just an idea.

Northeastern is one of the trickiest schools to gauge. Not only are applicant numbers soaring at most US News-ranked schools, but Northeastern in particular. The admissions process is becoming only more and more competitive each year. At orientation this summer, they definitely made it a point to tell us that we were the most qualified class ever at NEU and I'm sure this year's class will be even more competitive. Regardless of all of these depressing facts, I wish all of you good luck. Just keep updating your application with good credentials and grades, because showing strong interest will tell admissions you aren't using them as a safety.

does northeastern accept many who were deferred?

I have a better GPA, but worse ACT than you, and also go deferred. Add on a ton of EC's and what I thought was a good essay...I'm at a loss. Apparently this year Northeastern's standards jumped?

I have a 3.779 weighted GPA, 76/459 class rank (Top 17%), 1710 SAT I, 26 on ACT, I have been in the International Thespian Honors Society for four years. A Other than that, I have other strong extra curricular activities, and I have been employed since I was 14 years old. In Honors classes and AP. I don't think I should be entirely out of the running, but NEU seems arbitrary when it comes to their decisions. Do they still accept a good amount of people who were deferred the second time around?
