General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to NEU...?: Did anyone else get deferred or rejected with similar stats? Is there something they were looking for that I didn't have? What do you think chances are for regular admission and hopefully merit $?

you treated them as a safety, and they wanted to put the fear of god into people in places like CC as to make them show respect when applying to their school

The problem is I didn’t treat them as a safety. I called multiple times to make sure I was getting all my materials in on time. I emailed my regional counselor. Plus, I attended the “Orientation weekend” in November. I flew up from Florida to Boston and attended the honors information meeting and all the business school programs. I think I showed a great deal of interest.

dramski, i got deffered with similar stats, slightly lower sats but great sat II’s, ECs and volunteer…i was so shocked and upset i dont understand what more i could have done. I also showed so much interest and went to the open house etc. I don’t know what to do because NEU was deffinitly one of my top schools good luck, hopefully you’ll get in in April!

They thought you were treating them as a safety. You probably are applying to more difficult schools and they know it. Sometimes they take the gamble on rejecting/deferring a student an usually they’re right in their descision.

badromance: I know. This stinks. Good luck to you too.

And I haven’t applied to harder schools. The hardest schools I sent applications to are Tulane and Northeastern. I got into Tulane with a 22k annual scholarship, but Northeastern was (and is) my top choice, and I made an effort to ensure that they knew that.

wow. that sucks, you’re more than qualified. Maybe contact admissions and see if there’s any way you can show your interest… I can’t imagine you wouldn’t get in regular decision.

Here are my stats compared to yours and I got deferred as well

**General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to NEU…?: I was at Northeastern this summer and I took a business class for a week and did a 3 week internship so I know the campus very well. I understand the competitiveness of the admission process and while it is not my top choice (Delaware is) but I would probably consider it to be my second choice and I hope I get accepted come regular decision time.

I was deferred to Regular Decision; however many other people from my school who are significantly lower than me with class rank and GPA were accepted. I am very concerned and confused on how this could be.

What do you think my chances for admission will be for RD? I am going to send the admissions office a letter that Northeastern is my top school, and I was selected to be a teacher’s assistant in my Physics class.

It’s not being exclusive. First, it depends on the major you applied to. Very popular majors are much much harder to get into, because more people apply.

Second, it definitely is Tufts Syndrome. Middle-ranked schools and schools ranked well (but not top schools) sometimes will reject or defer very good students. The theory is that they are bound to get acceptances at other, better, schools. When a school is ranked, they look at the acceptance rate and the rate of people who decide to come. If they know someone could go to Yale, why would they waste an acceptance on them? It just hurts their rank when they know that student won’t come. If you for instance get into Brown EA, you’ll pull out your application at NEU, and voila! NEU isn’t worse off.

I’m not saying it’s a good policy, and obviously you should have got in. Chances are they will accept you for RD. Send admissions an email asking if there is any way you can increase your chances, etc etc. Make sure they know that if they accept you, you WILL go (even if its not 100% true).
