Yeah, I had my guidance counselor call Admissions to ask why I was deferred and what I can do to strengthen my application. (She had to leave a message - the Admissions officers were currently “making decisions.”) She also acknowledged that Northeastern is my number one.

I am an undecided engineering major, and I am a woman; so I thought that would work in my favor, being a minority within the major.

Additionally, many of the people from my school who did get accepted had pretty poor and mediocre grades; however, they had strong SATs. Maybe they filtered the applicants with a minimum SAT for EA. I would hate to acknowledge that they did that; however, I can not think of any other reason for my deferral.

I got a full ride this year lols. These are my stats:

General Comments, scholarship chances, status info, going to NEU…?:
My numbers are ****. Especially since my rank is in the triple digits.
But I got a full ride… probably cuz my major’s international business, and I’ve shown that I have a global perspective, and strong Spanish skills.

Yeah, I’m really disappointed that I was deferred. I don’t know how I could have made my application stronger (besides my test scores - and I’m not a good standardized test taker). I feel like they highly weighted Standardized Tests, even over the rigor of my course work and my GPA.

0000001, I feel your pain brah, as like you my GPA is high (3.92) but I have a relatively low SAT score of 1840. I know my SAT score is gonna cost me an acceptance at some unis, but I lucked out with Northeastern as they accepted me. I’m no good with standardized tests either it seems. I too believe rigor of course work and GPA is what ultimately should matter, which is why in my additional information section of the common app I explained how I took the hardest courses possible in my school. I guess Northeastern was impressed?

I do not believe you will not get a scholarship though, as I didn’t. My twin brother and I have almost the same stats. We BOTH have a 3.92 GPA exactly, but he has a 1980 on the SAT, while I have an 1840. He got a 12k scholarship + honors, I got neither.

Due to your high GPA though, I believe you still have a good shot. Maybe you can send some letter or something in which you discuss how Northeastern is your top school (be it true or not) and how determined you are to go there.

MagicalMalik, keep your heads up tho.
The football coach at my school told me that NEU recently removed their football program.
Thus, they have a buttload of money left over, and is being generous with scholarships this year.

I got a letter telling me I got pretty much a full ride (They’ll cover 87% of tuition, room, books, etc etc etc… excluding food costs), and it said that more should be on the way and I should be notified no later than April 1st.

So you getting notified later for scholarship is possible I think

Yeah, I am going to write a letter to Admissions to tell them that Northeastern is my first choice. Hopefully, it will work out. Otherwise, I don’t know what to do to make my application any stronger.

I really don’t understand though how people in my school with ranks in the high thirties to high fifties (top 20%) got accepted and they are taking extremely easy senior year classes , while I am 11th (top 3%) and I have the hardest schedule there is to possibly take and I’m deferred. It’s frustrating and confusing.

And, my essay was really good as well. I wrote about a really difficult obstacle that I dealt with/and still am dealing with and it definitely conveyed that I wouldn’t let anything stop me in life.
My recommendations were superb too (I was able to read them).

I don’t understand what could have happened?

Okay, how does this make sense…everyone from my school who applied to Northeastern (all lower class rank, GPA, and everything) were accepted - 5 people, and I the top person was deferred. How is that right? That just seems incorrect…can they make mistakes importing the decision?

Is it a bad choice to call admissions myself (my parents) … or should I just leave it to solely my guidance counselor? It just it not right that these people who definitely haven’t done any extracurricular that would outshine mine were accepted and I was deferred. I worked my ass off the past 4 years to get where I am in my class and these people didn’t at all. I almost have an A+ average.

I would like to call but I don’t want to hinder my chances of admissions for RD because it is my first choice. Suggestions?

Here is what the admissions blog says about deferrals
“The Admission Committee chose to defer candidates when we felt we needed additional time to review their applications within the regular decision pool. A deferral decision in no way reduces a candidate’s chances for admission. We encourage you to submit second quarter/mid-year grades, any recent standardized test results that we may not have received as well as any additional information about new academic or personal achievements. Your applications will be re-evaluated in the regular decision pool and a final decision released by March 31.”

I could imagine it being frustrating, but I guess there isn’t anything new that you could do

Yeah, I just find it peculiar that people way below me would all be accepted and I would be deferred. And some had SATs the same if not lower than mine and some had higher scores but way lower grades. I just can’t get over the fact that 5 people below me got accepted and I didn’t…like I didn’t work that had for 4 years to have people who slacked off get accepted and me have to wait 3 more months to see IF I even get in. I’m actually nervous that I won’t get in at all. And I was hoping I would get a scholarship.

Do I still have significant chances of getting accepted with a good scholarship?
