* At my school, my course load is considered very demanding. Also, very few students take AP courses due to the requirements such as a 90 average, essay and interview and due to the fact that they are extremely challenging and very few people earn UW A’s.
* Also, by the time I graduate high school, I will graduate with 7 years of foreign language which exceeds the 5 year requirement, and is rare in my school, must people do 5.

Weighted
Rank: 52/90, low rank due to hard schedule and the fact that I slacked off.

EC’s
Varsity Soccer - 9-12, lettered my junior year.
Varsity Softball - 9-12,Captain, lettered as freshman, I pitch and broke my school’s record of most strike outs, most consecutive innings/games pitched and most wins. I am not sure if I am good enough to play division 1 but I am definitely able to play division 2 or 3.

French Club 10-12, president
SEEK - 9-12.
Song Contest Lyrics committee - 10-12.
Tutoring - 10, 11, 12 in history and French 2-3x a week.

Jobs:
Sophmore Year and Junior Year, I was a camp counselor at a camp in CT, for 2 months.
I am a certified lifeguard as well.
I helped coach a youth softball team last spring.

Teacher Recommendations = Excellent, French teacher said one of the best they’ve encountered in their career, AP U.S. teacher said one of the best students as well.

I would like to double major in international relations with a concentration in politics and philosophy. Also, maybe minor in Art History.

Is my GPA too low for Albany?

If you look at the incoming freshman class stats; I think the average is like an A minus and this year, of course, the number applying has gone up again. Your SAT is in range for the school. State schools aren't as able to consider all the non SAT/GPA factors that private schools do so grades count for a lot. If you aren't going to play softball for the school, it won't be a huge factor in the admission decision that you are very good (did you apply to smaller schools that might want you to play?). I think the big issue is that your GPA for junior year would raise concerns. Have you improved senior year? If you really want to go to Albany, make sure they receive any documentation of better grades this year. Good luck!

SUNY Albany: A- average...Are you kidding? These poor NY kids; if you live OOS and apply, you basically need a pulse to be admitted.....(Then again, there must be a ton of grade inflation in NY if that A- is accurate.....)

Hmm I sure you can get in. I got accepted to their Business Administration major.

I had a 84-85 average (~3.0)
A 1710 also on the SATs (M:630 V:510 W:570 Essay:9)
A majority of my classes were honors throughout High School
I think I'm ranked 32/128 (something like that)

I have a good handful of extra curricular activities:
Varsity Wrestling - 11th Grade
Varsity Golf - 10th, 11th, and 12th Grade. Going to be captain this year.
Varsity Wrestling Manager - 12th Grade
Summer Day Camp Assistant Counselor - 9th and 10th Grade
Youth Group at Church - 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Grade
Church Ministry Team - 10th, 11th and 12th Grade
30 Hour Famine Fundraiser - 9th and 10th

I don't have that much work experience:
Summer Day Camp Counselor - 11th Grade. Worked for 2 months.

I think my essay was pretty good. I wrote about my wrestling experience and how it helped shape my life. Basically saying how it changed me.

Anyway I think you have a pretty good shot at Albany. I hope my post helped. Good luck with everything :)

You got deferred?

Wow.. are you serious? I'm not going to even answer that..

http://www.suny.edu/student/downloads/Pdf/2007_Admissions_QF_StateOp.pdf

That's where I got the A minus from. I was wondering if it might be weighted.

Muffy: It could very well be weighted; no way to tell....But alot of schools outside of NYS use 4.0 scale, so I'm not really sure how to interpret..Thanks for the chart though..Interesting........

My daughter has the A minus, but her PSATs were way below Albany's range, so I'm hoping the stats are exaggerated!!!

My senior grades are not that great :(

They might have deferred a ton of people. A lot of colleges are deferring and waitlisting because they don't want to be overflowing in September and the number of applications is so crazy. Did you apply to any of the littler SUNYs with Division III softball?

I would say that it would be due to the overabundance of applicants. But I think you have a good chance of getting in after all is said and done.

Where else did you apply/get accepted to?

No, SUNY Albany is the only one I applied to. I applied to a ton of schools but mainly liberal art ones in the NE. I haven't heard of any acceptances yet. I got a rejection letter from Marquette though.

"Teacher Recommendations = Excellent, French teacher said one of the best they’ve encountered in their career, AP U.S. teacher said one of the best students as well."

Did you see the recs? If not, then there may be something in them that is affecting the outcome of your applications.

I did not see the letters of recommendations but my guidance counselor assured me that they were great. My french teacher even told me what she wrote in her letter of recommendation.

Don't over-analyze it. Muffy is right. Your combined GPA/SAT scores are on the low end of the Albany range, and SUNY admissions offices generally do not give much weight to anything else. You might get in, but your numbers say you are a better match for some of the SUNY colleges.

How are my SAT scores too low. 630 on CR is above the 50% according to collegeboard. Also, my 500 in math is only 10 points below the 50%. 22% had a GPA of 3.0-3.2. So I don't think that is it.

One problem could be that your grades are kind of all over the place. You do really well in some courses and then not so well in others. State schools are very "numbers" oriented.

Have you applied to any smaller, liberal arts schools? As some schools get crossed off your list (either by you or them), then that's the time to redouble your efforts on still viable schools.

If you are set on going to SUNY Albany, maybe you should write a personal letter to the dean of admissions re: your grades. Schools appreciate when a student, at least, seems aware of any "problems" they may have in their application. If you just seem clueless about it--that's the worst thing. You have A LOT of strengths, so go w/ those but don't ignore your "downfalls". The schools aren't ignoring it. :-(

Your grades don't look that bad for SUNY Albany, except for that D in Chemistry. Your GPA in the core subjects (Math, Science, Social Studies, English and Foreign Language) computes to around a 3.2 UW. What we don't know is your GPA on the 100 point scale, which is what the SUNYs look at for in-state students. Your class rank may be giving them pause.

All-in-all you look to fit the profile for the middle 50% of Albany undergrads, so you may be OK with RD. Good luck.

Thanks, SUNY Albany was near the bottom of my list and thought it was a safety. I think I will definitely write a letter to the Dean of Admissions at SUNY Albany. I really appreciate all the advice I have recieved.
