Why was I put into Rowan Select?

Basically, Rowan Select is for people who did not meet admissions criteria or something. I am wondering, what are the variables involved that would make a student subject to be put in this? I am really confused because I got put in it, my grades were superb but my SAT a little low (530 Reading, 570 writing, 430 math). I averaged a 92 AT LEAST for all my classes last year and this year (through all highschool no lower than an 80 at least, grades improved each year), I was taking one honors class last year and 2 this year. I also had 3.7 GPA or something. I didnt do any afterschool activities however.

I got an e-mail from them talking about how I will have to take the Rowan select enrollment course in summer which consists of issues related to first year experience of students, critical thinking, time management, and academic integrity. I don’t see how one would think I need such courses judging by my grades…I myself know I don’t need it but they don’t know me so its different. I am just concerned whether something got messed when the school sent my information over. What do you guys think? Is this appropriate? If not, what should I do?

My best “guess” is that you were put in this program because of your SAT scores. Your combined Reading and Math scores (most schools don’t even onsider the writing score as it is being phased out) of 960 is on the low side for Rowan students. This is often done just by the SAT numbers alone without much, if any, consideration being given to other factors (i.e. GPA). I would contact them to see if there is any way you could meet with someone to try and appeal this. Also make sure they have all your correct school information. Good luck.

Why would you want to appeal it? This is a good thing, not a bad thing.

You got in. Your grades reflect your school and your classmates and your teachers. Your SAT scores are low compared to others’, but you’ve been given a shot. The Select program is to make sure that college and Rowan are the right fits for you. It’s like football preseason - it levels the playing field and prepares you for when the games get real.

And, you get a nice apartment and live the campus life before it gets hectic.

Do it! You’ll enjoy it. The worst thing that can happen is that you’ll save yourself thousands of bucks.
