Why was I rejected?

I just got rejected from ucla and I don't really understand.

UC GPA: 4.5
Unweighted: 3.98
SAT: 2100 (M:720 W:720 CR:660) -not the best but still above UCLA's average
top 1%: 6/660
Varsity tennis all 4 years
JV Track (Pole Vault)
President of two clubs
Won regional and state speech competitions
Decent essays
(got into uci, ucdavis, ucsb, and ucsd if that means anyting)

I'm not that upset yet because my first choice for UCs is Berkeley and I'm still waiting on that, but I still thought I would have gotten accepted. I knew nothing was for sure, but i was quite shocked when I found out that many of my friends with much lower GPAs and SAT scores and extra curriculars were accepted.
Any possible reasons why?
Does UCB seem likely?

I'm trying hard not to complain or anything, but I feel like I worked harder in high school compared to my friends who got in because I took so many more APs and worked my butt off to get straight As. It's just kind of frustrating.

No one knows that answer and it’s honestly best to not dwell in your rejection, but look towards March 28

It’s a crapshoot, no one here can tell you the answer.

Your guidance counselor may be able to get some feedback about this. On Monday, pop by that person’s office and ask about it.

My sympathies. It’s just crazy. I’m reading a lot of posts of well qualified candidates who are not getting in. Given 60,000 applications, I’m wondering how much human error is coming into play. GL with UCB.

Remember, you’re probably not competing not against the general pool of applicants but the applicants in your particular demographic, such as your school. If you go to a highly competitive school, they can’t have too many people from that one school at UCLA so it’s probably harder to get in from there than from some very rural place in CA.

What division or major did you apply for? If you applied for one that is more popular relative to its capacity, then you will face a higher standard of selectivity.

You say your essays were decent, but the admissions office might have gotten bad vibes from it. College selection is not a fine art, a few misplaced sentences could paint you as generic and stale.

See my post here. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1474323-rejected-ucd-ucsd-chances-la-cal-privates.html#post15633145

@SpaceDuck yah I know, I’m trying not to think about it, and that I’ll probably never know the reason, but still…

@Parent46 that’s true, but I’m ranked #6 out of 660 in my school, some of my friends who got in weren’t even top 20, and I’m top 1% in my whole county

@ucbalumnus Art major, hmmm every single friend who got in applied for math and science majors…

You can never tell. Some schools are looking for “who you are” and “what you will bring to the diversity of our campus” to differentiate among many people who have the resumes full of I did this and that. It may be the reason lay among these elements.

But now, what is done is done.

The best way to move on, is to move on, life requires one to take reality as it comes then take the next best option available.

I’m sure you will have options available to you.

This is the most probable reason why you were rejected. You didn’t show enough demonstrated interest in this major, relative to perhaps your course selection and definitely your extracurricular activities. Also, it’s common to submit an art portfolio if you’re applying as an art major. You picked the wrong major, methinks.

it is sad to hear about ur case but in all 6 branches of my school in the 6 states of the emirates only two students were accepted which is very disappointing when they have a very low course load with much lower SAT scores than other ppl who were rejected
there is always March 28 good luck :)

Talk to your GC tomorrow and ask her to call UCLA admissions, to be sure there was not a mix-up with your transcripts or paperwork. With your stats one would think you would be accepted. Best of luck with UCB.

rejected by cal… well, time to work on my appeals:P
