Why Was I Rejected?

BU was my "safety"ish school. I’ve gotten into NYU (unoffically, got a “likely letter” type thing), McGill, and some top colleges in the UK so far.

I have a 1450 sat (750v), 780 writing, 750 literature, and 680 math ic. i’m not sure of my exact gpa, but it’s near 4.0. i lived in hong kong for my freshman year which is a “hook,” I guess. I’m graduating high school a year early (they said that wouldn’t be a problem, when I called), and I haven’t taken pre-calculus but I’ve met all their other requirements. My essays and recs were good. ECs sort of eh.

I wasn’t planning on attending so it’s no big deal, but I’m just wondering what might be the reason? My guidance counselor said I’d almost “definitely” get in. Is it because I haven’t taken pre-calculus? I don’t wanna look whiney and annoying, I’m just curious. :)

Any ideas? :)

Congrats to everyone who got in

did you apply to CAS?

yup, i did

Probably realized you weren't going to attend.

that couldnt be it.

the reason i can think of is that you didnt fulfill a requirement such as fee or recommendation or something... though i forgot to do recs because im probably not attending and they hunted me down until i did them.

No, I paid the fee and I sent my recs - their website said that my application's been complete for ages, so I'm sure they would've said something if I forgot.. unless they forgot to update their site :\ lol

no, I agree with Fish. They knew that it was your safety school, and you'd be in elsewhere. And you are!

there are quite a few of us with similar stats that got in, so i really doubt the "safety" idea. in fact, most of us with those stats were offered the university scholarship, so if anything BU tries to attract kids with such grades.

it may be that you're graduating early.. i've read that's a red flag for some schools - they are unsure of how someone graduating early would transition into a college workload. i doubt it's because you haven't taken precalc, unless you didn't substitute it with another math class or AP of some kind.

not sure, sorry i'm not very helpful.

hey, it sucks but just move on. You obviously can do fine at another college. I don't mean to be noisy but how can you graduate HS without even taking pre-calc??

The easiest solution is to just call the admissions department. It will only take five minutes, and they'll give you the best answer.

do you think they'll tell me? i know some schools do, but i don't know about BU in particular.

you only need three years of math to graduate most high schools (or, at least mine.). at mine we need two years of algebra and one of geometry. i took algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2. i would've taken geometry my freshman year (and thus pre-calc this year) but i came back here from hong kong during the last quarter of that year, so i couldn't have gone into the class right at the end of the year, because the curriculum was different in the school i went to in HK (i explained this in the "supplemental information" section of my app). of course, i could've spent an extra year in high school just to take pre-calc, but that's so not worth it to me! i'm going to be an english major! :) pfffft math. :P

I agree....pfffft math.

Maybe they have different requirements for international students?

I'm not an international student - I only lived there for eight months :)

My mom called them. They're going to call back later once they've looked at my file again.. hrmmm

Morningtheft....if you are NOT planning on attending BU then why are you pursuing this at all. You have gotten accepted at schools that were higher on your list. Let it go!!

I would've considered it, it just wasn't one of my very top choices.

It was the lack of pre-calculus that got me rejected. Oh well.

I'm sure it was the whole BU not being a reach for you thing that got you rejected. They probably realized that kids with scores as high as yours will get into other schools.

I doubt that - there are loads of kids in the other thread with SAT scores in the 1500s who got in, and I'm sure they got into schools a lot better than BU.

Thanks anyways :)
