A couple of months ago I started receiving my college acceptance letters. I got into my top choice, SUNY Geneseo, but failed to even get wait-listed at SUNY Stony Brook. I have decent SAT Scores (reading 590, math 560, and writing 600). I also have a ton of extra- curriculars. I was a 3 year varsity football starter and academic all-county, a 2 year varsity wrestler, and a 2 year varsity track athlete. I also participated in music where I was a part of the Marching Band 4 years (percussion), Concert Band 4 years (bassoon) and Wind Ensemble (2 years). I was also the only student selected from my high school to attend American Legion Boys State(for those who have not heard of this please google it as it is very good to have on a college resume). I also took 2 APs (my school only offers 5). So can anyone tell me why I was completely overlooked by Stony Brook and not even wait-listed just totally rejected?

Your SAT scores are terrible. Thats why.

I didnt think they were that bad and I do know those who have scored way below that and have been fully accepted. I also for got to mention I was ranked 50/352 students

Average SAT Range: 1580 - 1890
Your score: 1750

If you wanted to get in, you could have just gotten like a 1900+. Its not that hard.

^ GreedIsGood, you’re wrong. His scores are right in the middle of their range so he wasn’t rejected because of that.

Lcolon, what was your GPA? That seems to be the main factor as most state schools consider GPA + SAT/ACT before anything else.

Obviously it was too hard for me or i would have done it.

My GPA was around a 3.35, definatly a 3.3 Im just not sure about that last digit

GreedIsGood, get a grip!

Lcolon, maybe you didn’t stand out enough! How were your essays and recommendations? Perhaps they failed to truly represent you. Sorry for your rejection but congrats on Geneseo :)

Hard to say at this point. Assume your where your meant to be and have a great life…

Thanks for the congrats. I felt I had alright recommendations though some were very generic. Some of my coaches letters were a little more personal so I think i was represented sufficiently enough for Stony Brook.

This is their GPA spread:

37% had h.s. GPA of 3.75 and higher

25% had h.s. GPA between 3.5 and 3.74

18% had h.s. GPA between 3.25 and 3.49

16% had h.s. GPA between 3.0 and 3.24

4% had h.s. GPA between 2.5 and 2.99

It appears your GPA was between the 20th and 38th percentile, or in the lower half of their spread. If I had to give a reason, it’s probably that.

If it’s any consolation, you seem like a terrific and well rounded applicant and if I was the admission office I would have accepted you. It’s just that admission into state schools is mostly a numbers game, so they miss out on promising people like you. Stay devoted in your endeavors and have a great life!

Thanks for the words of encouragement (not sarcasm. Im being serious) I just dont understand Stony Brook. So many people are going there who have done way less than me in high school (not trying to be arrogant its just the truth, I know them personally). I feel like I asked the girl thats desperate out and she rejected me ( sorry if i sound like a male shovenist its just a good comparison)

Your scores are on the low end and for a state school thats all they care about. State school aren’t allowed to be prejudice, so they just care about your scores and since your scores aren’t very impressive they decided to reject you.
College admissions are more or less random anyways so don’t feel bad.

It’s best not to dwell on these things. Just forget it and move on mate. You can’t change it now, so just be excited for the fall. Best of luck!

Exactly. He’s just full of himself.

I’ve heard of a lot of people being wait listed at Geneseo, and they have a relatively low admit rate (around 36%?), so you should be proud to get in there. Were these the only 2 places you applied?

@ GreedisGood. I dont think they are low for a state school if you look at their range, at least in the SUNY system. Im pretty much in the middle. You are probably correct when it comes to my math score though. It is low for Stony brook but in my mind still acceptable.

No I also applied to buffalo, albany and Binghamton. Binghamton was the only other one that rejected me

^ Binghamton is the best of the SUNYs, so no surprise there

Don’t worry about Stony Brook. You got into your first choice school, so it’s time to get excited about that – you’ll be there pretty soon!

A friend’s son didn’t have the best time at Stony Brook. He was an athlete and they didn’t let him ever carry a full schedule for fear it would be bad for his training. Four years later, he didn’t have enough credits to graduate but couldn’t stand the thought of going back. They chewed him up and spat him out when his shoulder went bad. This may happen to many athletes but it’s left many of us with a bad feeling about Stony Brook.
