Why was this student admitted to Yale SCEA?

Was it because of affirmative action? I have tried to reproduce her stats here, and I do not see what qualified her to attend such a prestigious university.

Hispanic female at a competitive Prep school in New Mexico; took two of the four "hard" courses that most students opt not to take; spent the first semester of her junior year in Spain; parents are divorced.

GPA: 3.96 uw
Decile: Top 10% (uw) in a class of 57

SAT I: 2130 (CR+M+W), 1390 (CR+M)
SAT II: ?

AP: Spanish Lang--5

Scholastic Distinctions:
- National Merit Commended
- Cum Laude Society
- Book award

Extracurriculars:
- Participated in school musical
- Employed during summer
- Volunteered at children's museum

Essays: They were extremely verbose. I got the sense that she was trying to appear more sophisticated than she really is. Needless to say, I was not impressed.

Teacher/Councilor Recommendations: Good/Excellent

seriously, get a life. we are not adcoms, so don't waste your time.

She was accepted because the admission committee found that she deserved to be in Yale.
What's wrong with you? Why are you so JEALOUS of her? What did she do to you? She deserves a good education too, you motherf***er.
And by the way, she does have good stats. Go find something to do, au lieu de raconter des commerages sur les gens.

yeah u do come out to be a mofo

because she is hispanic and because she lives in new mexico.

see how easy that was?

let's think here: legacy, development, request by a development? Certainly you must know all of these reasons are possible including the stats are good. You must really be burning up out there in NM.

URM and about a 1400 SAT?
Definitely Ivy League Material...you should congratulate her.
College admissions are often a crap shoot and mistakes can happen, but it is downright rude to debase such an outstanding accomplishment by questioning her credentials.

you think this is bad?

try 1950 ED into Princeton.

Damn, someone is bitter . . .

I take the most challenging course load available at a competitive prep school in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I am a white male and double legacy at MIT. Essays, recommendations, supplementary recommendation, and interview are all superb. School does not weight or rank.

So you euclid were deferred from MIT and yet you were double legacy? This picture becomes more clear? So you have more money, more connections and no acceptance? ouch

Yale is a private university. It has any number of admission goals and needs. Among them are pleasing alumni, satisfying big donors, having winning sports teams, bringing in kids with unique talents, and, yes, diversity. For any of these reasons, some kids who have good but not absolutely stellar stats get into Yale. Perfect example: George W. Bush whose SATs and GPA were lower than this kid's. The bottom line is that schools like Yale are primarily merit oriented, but not entirely because they have other needs and goals which they want to satisfy.

what was george bushes SAT? ^^ and where did you see it

Im just curious.

just for the express purpose of making little gunner twats like you mad. HTH

She was in the top 10% of a competitive school, had excellent teacher recs, competitive (yet not stellar by CC standards) SATs, great grades, took a challenging curriculum, and you are trying to get us to say that affirmative action was behind it? Who knows?? How about you channel your jealous energy elsewhere...

Well, well, well, we know why don't we? If you applied MIT early and you have no idea about your Yale app why the big deal? Is it because MIT rolled you? MIT and Yale aren't exactly looking for the same thing.

"Hispanic female at a competitive Prep school in New Mexico"

Bingo! A 3.96 UW at a prep school is phenomenal, not to mention for a Hispanic female from New Mexico with great test scores. Give the girl a break...

Can't tell you exactly where I saw Bush's SATs, probably the NY Times, but both his stats and Kerry's where both pretty widely circulated during the 2004 election. As I recall, Bush was in the mid 600s for both V&M. Ditto Kerry.

Oops. Slightly wrong on Bush's SATs. According to the Washington Post, Bush's SATs were 566 V and 640 M.

before re-centering the scoring......hehehe

I think the OP has a right to be suspicious of how this girl got in. After all, her SAT scores were subpar by Yale's standards (they don't even meet the 25th percentile). She only took 1 AP course, that too, one which she could probably easily get a 5 in: hardly what i would call a "rigorous courseload." Her extracurriculars and awards are at best mediocre. Her only redeeming factor is her GPA, but at a school where there are only 4 "hard" courses, i question how competitive the school really is. I would venture to guess that the OP doesn't know her whole story, or he's leaving out some information about her that he might not know. However, if what he posted really is her entire application, it is quite sad she got in. Just look at the Yale EA board with MANY more qualified asians and whites who got deferred and rejected. I think we all know in the back of our minds she must have gotten in through affirmative action.
