I'm looking to transfer to Wash U but have only been out to visit the school once and would really like some input from current/prospective students. Why did you choose to go to Wash U, and what are some of the aspects that you like most about the school?

I'm really excited about going to wash U for various reasons

Everyone seemed very laidback and easygoing. I mean comparing the pre-med students there to the ones I saw at Johns Hopkins, the Hopkins kids seemed too wound up. I mean, yes the kids at wash U were stressed, but they also knew how to effectively take care of that stress.

The classes seemed interesting and everyone there seems very intelligent, but not in a show-offy way. It's more of an understated, "yes i'm smart, but i know how to have fun too."

The food was AWESOME!! i didn't know colleges could have such nice dining options

Heavenly dorms (well most of them, lol)

Professors that actually want to help. It seems that they want you to succeed

A cult like feeling that everyone loves the place and most people seem to easily mix together. Granted, i'm not actually at the school yet, but i absolutely can not wait until next year!!

Iirokotree covered just about everything. The people I met when I was at a prefrosh event were awesome.

From what I've heard, WashU is extremely flexible in allowing students to take classes in its different schools. Once accepted, you can also easily switch between schools if you decide to change your focus or major.

ditto with what has been said, along with the diversity of the school...Notre Dame was my other choice, and the diversity was a huge tipping factor for me. I am black, and I could have gone to an HBCU, but for the same reason I didnt want to go to one of those, I didnt want to go to an all white school either. I needed a mixture. WashU seems to have that (about as much of a mixture as one will find).

Personally, I love that I can take classes in both the engineering and art schools...
And just about everything else about the school.

Although I'm not there yet (obviously), I plan on fully becoming a member of this cult. I'll be the one who comes back home during breaks only able to say 'I loooooooooove WashU!!!!!!!'

Thanks so much everyone! I live in Virginia and just went out to visit the school and fell in love but am not sure that I would be able to handle the distance...any thoughts?

The school is only 25 minutes from the St Louis airport and there is a Metro train line that runs directly from the airport to both the east and west corners of the school. Students receive a free pass for the Metro Line (which also runs east into St Louis.) There is also a student run moving service called U Trucking that (at least in NY and NJ you could call them to check on VA) will pick your stuff up at a local rendezvous (or come directly to your house for an additional charge) and drop your stuff off in your room at your designated time and date. They will also store your stuff over the summer. (My kid also rents a bike on campus from a student run outfit.) So even though we are from NJ, we have found the back and forth to be fairly easy.

Why Wash U

Commencement 2008 was amazing!!!!!

Strong academics, happy students, easily get involved in stuff you enjoy, people are open-minded and accepting of a wide range of issues (it's a pretty liberal campus), high-quality food, the intellectual atmosphere, the campus itself, the reliable transportation system, the free pizza events, top Div III sports, abundant academic support system; probably can think of more but those are off the top of my head...
