I got into IU and i know that a 3.7 GPA and 29 ACT score get you directly admitted. I petitioned with a 3.65GPA and 4.0 1st semester senior year. I mentioned this in my essay. I also had a 31 ACT. I got a email a few days ago that I didnt get directly admitted through my petition. I was under the impression that anything close for the GPA and anything over 30 would get me in.

What did you write about?

If I were to petition, and get rejected, could I petition again if I raised my SAT score?

I have the required GPA for DA to Kelley, but I’m probably not close enough for the SAT scores.
The problem is, I’m taking the March 10 SAT, so my scores won’t be available until right before the deadline.
I know that petitioning earlier will increase my current chances, but I don’t know if I can petition more than once… The second time I petition (right before the deadline) my SAT score SHOULD be higher.

I don’t think you can petition more than once. I wouldn’t rely on the ACT scores being there in time; too much to rely on without being certain. As for the above case, that’s really odd that your petition was rejected with your ACT score. I’d call and talk to them about it if I were you.

My bad, SAT*

^^ It is somewhat odd that the OP didn’t get his petition admitted with the 31 and 3.65. That is why I am curious as to what he wrote in his essay. He says, “4.0 1st semester senior year. I mentioned this in my essay.” Obviously I haven’t seen his essay, but the fact that he brings up the GPA he earned one random semester of high school is somewhat of a red flag to me. The GPA could have been brought up in a perfectly legitimate way, but the fact that the stats were there, but it was still rejected leads me to think maybe the essay was off.

The essay may have been off, but the fact that he garnered a 4.0 his first semester of senior year demonstrates that he’s better than his 3.65 cumulative shows. I was in a similar situation before my GPA went up to 3.7. I had a 3.667 and it was all because of freshman year. You should still go to IU and go for standards admission, though.

I thought my essay was pretty descent. Not amazing but nothing that would lead admissions counselors to reject me based on my essay. I am generally a good writer and am a writer for my school newspaper which requires a seperate application and has about a 50% acceptance rate. I also got in the 99% for my ACT writing. Anyway I tried not to sound cocky or like I deserved to be a direct admit. I only refrenced the 4.0 1st semester once to show that my GPA has gotten better. For the rest of the essay, I talked about Kelley.

A guy on the petition committee told me you can petition as many times as you need

^^^ Even with the same stats?

Why would they allow that if the petition is the same?

I think he means if applied and got denied once with say a 1290 and 3.6, then retook the SAT and got a 1400, you could petition again. I know that question was asked in thread a couple of weeks ago and it was never really determined what the policy was.

You could probably win if you petition but when I spoke to a counselor they said anything with a GPA requirement is a hard number and won’t round up.

My son is in a very similar postition with a 31 ACT and 3.61 GPA , fairly rigorous courses and his petition was denied. I am am curious what bigboy94 ended up doing: further testing / petitioning, going the standard admit route or picking another university? Any advice for us would be appreciated.
