Why wasn't I accepted? (Transfer 2013)

Hi, I'm currently enrolled in a community college and here are my stats:

College:

12 credits (currently) 21(by end of semester)
3.69 GPA
Good essay
Okay(ish) resume

High school:

2.7 GPA
1260 on SAT

I find it a little peculiar getting rejected because the average GPA for transfer applicants transferring into the spring semester in 2012 was 3.2.

Also, I was told by an admissions representative that the college courses are looked at more heavily than high school courses.

Is anyone else in the same situation?

I am a little further college wise and also was rejected.

42 transferable credits
Both English and math fundamentals completed
3.8 gpa

I applied in mid September and was rejected yesterday for spring 2013. I was pretty floored but I’m going to take another semesters worth and try again for the fall. I’m not sure what else I could do to be more enticing but I guess that’s what pre advising is for.

Hello Crossiantsandtea,

I am sorry that you were not accepted to UMD for Spring 2013.

I think I know the reason why.

UMD wants to see 30 college credits and a good GPA (which you do have). I do not know if you applied by the priority deadline. If you applied by the priority deadline with 30 credits, you would have gotten a good chance of getting admitted to UMD. I suggested that you try again with 30 credits or more.

Regular admission deadline to UMD is very competitive than the priority deadline and applicants for freshman admission and transfer admission have exceed the average ranges in getting into the school. As more students are applying and getting admitted to UMD with stellar stats beyond the average recommendations, the more competitive it will be getting accepted to UMD.

You can also try the Maryland Transfer Advantage Program (MTAP) and there are certain community colleges in Maryland, (if you do live in the state) that offer the program. I suggested that you visit [Office of Undergraduate Admissions · University of Maryland Maryland Transfer Advantage Program](http://www.admissions.umd.edu/requirements/MarylandTransferAdvantageProgram.php) website.

If your community college does not participate in MTAP, you could speak to a pre-transfer adviser at UMD and your adviser at the community college. They could help you getting into UMD.

I hope this helps.

Hello Mupples,

I am sorry that you were not accepted to UMD. As I stated in my previous post, UMD’s regular admission deadline is very competitive. Your best option would be applying by the priority deadline (Fall: March 1st. Spring: August 1st). You would have a better chance in getting accepted to UMD that way than the regular admission deadline. I hope this helps.

Crazygirl9999,

Thanks for the advice. I’m going to do a walk in advising to see where I can plug some holes up in my core. I didn’t realize how important priority was until after I had applied, but now I’m more informed.

Thanks crazygirl9999.

I should’ve known that I needed more credits if I even stood a chance. Oh well. Also, I applied a month after the priority deadline.

I’m not sure whether CCBC offers MTAP or not, I’ll have to look into that. At least now I’ll have a chance to really work hard so that I can get accepted into an even better college(Georgia Tech?) and make UMD my second choice.

Thanks again, you really helped!
