Why were you granted good merit aid at Rice?

If you have earned a scholarship at Rice or know someone who has, could you please try to list why you think you were given the merit aid? Rice is such a high-level school and all the students are superstars, I’m curious who was given merit aid, how much, and why?

My son enjoyed his time at a Rice during the recent 3 day SOAR event, but we are very afraid to ED at Rice, even though they are sending out emails about how students applying early “are given exclusive consideration for the Lonestar Scholarship—a $10,000 per year award, renewable for four years.”. We need a fairly generous merit aid package to afford Rice.

My son is a high stat kid, he has a 36 ACT, 2310 SAT, a NMSF (likely NMF), National AP scholar, 4.0 GPA UW, 3/729 class rank, and is taking CC math courses this year. He has some oddball EC’s that are good / interesting, but nothing breathtaking. He has been very engaged with Rice over several years, and we hope his SOAR participation helps him demonstrate his interest, something that Rice values.

Thank you in advance for sharing your stories.

No merit aid here, so I can’t help you. Have you already filled out the FAFSA and know what your situation for need-based aid is? I understand if you just aren’t prepared to cover how much FAFSA says you should be able to, but I just wanted to make sure you are aware that Rice covers 100% of demonstrated need.

Also, have you read about Rice’s other merit scholarships? Some schools will just give “merit aid” as a bartering tool, but Rice has specific scholarships that every student is considered for. It might help you focus your search and plan the application or essay.
