Why Would You Go To An Ivy If You Are Only Going For Undergrad?

i could get it w/o lifting a finger.... it's called affirmative action

Now you've gone from being incompetent poster to an offensive one. I'm sure many minorities would not look favorably on that comment.

Please get off your own high horse, and realize that intelligent people go to top schools. Letters from ivies mean nothing.

And why are you categorizing full price to an Ivy as a silver metal, and a full tuition scholarship to another top school as a gold metal? Ever consider that perhaps the Ivy, which tend to be known to give great FA packages, would be cheaper to attend?

want a source.... read this entire thread.... everyone has the same opinion of ivies....opposite from mine......

I was referring to the arbitrary number you posted: 96%.

Please attempt to read and comprehend some of my previous posts? Please?

are you a minority in the college world (black/hispanic/native american)???? no.... so don't speak for any,.i am.... and i am speaking like many minorities... where i live speak... ivy won't give a dime.... to me.... cause of my parent's salary.

please comprehend my answer... that random number is reflected in the responses of ppl like you throughout the thread.

How are you in any position to speculate on my ethnicity?

Haha, you are junior in high school. Makes sense now.

i am rising senior technically..... but i am in a special college/highschool program.

here is your quote: "I'm sure many minorities would not look favorably on that comment." and from this...... you are not implicating yourself as one...

Which makes your claim that you could simply get in anywhere because of your racial status even more ridiculous.

Just because I said that many minorities wouldn't appreciate that comment doesn't mean that I am not one. Don't make assumptions. For the record though, I am not a minority. That does not make your comments any less disturbing to me.

please listen and learn... i not only mentioned my race... i said i have good APs, (class rigor), ECs, leadership, GPA, etc....... stop trying to isolate comments.... look at the entire picture...

you are not... so stop trying to front as one... no minority would speak of themselves in the 3rd person way that you did..... i'm done... with this discussion go bother someone else.

GAClassof2008...

first of all, I don't get why the f you differentiate between the ivies and caltech, duke, chicago, UWash-St. Louis??? The latter are equally hard to get into (more or less), have the same calibre student body, resources and facilities. If your claim is that these non-ivy league schools are just as good as the ivy league then you are right. However, if you claim that just about any other school is just as good as an ivy, then you are VERY wrong.

Ethicity was never a factor in the original discussion. You made it one, claming you could get into an Ivy because of affirmative action.

I Said They Are Just As Good...but Everyone Else In This Thread Think Otherwise..... Ivy= A Whole Different League To Them

In my opinion the ivies aren't much better than the top 20-25 universities in the nation (US news). After that you can see a significant gap in the quality. I don't know if you're in college or not but there is a SIGNIFICANT difference in quality between students of lets say Princeton and Rutgers.

Guys, there is no point in arguing with this kid. He hasn't even applied for college yet.

I'd just like to state that I don't believe the ivies are in the league of their own, just so the OP knows this. They are certainly up there with the best, but not the only top schools, far from it.

GAclassof2008:

1) Please apply to a couple of Ivies when you're going through applications, to confirm or disabuse us of our guesses concerning your likely success at those schools.

2) Stop Capitalizing Every Word In Your Posts. It's Bad English, And Makes Your Posts Look Terrible. (The fact that I just capitalized every word there was sarcasm, by the way)

3) Please respond to this: if you take a student of given determination, motivation, desire to succeed, and so on, and stick him/her in a top school (the Ivies, Stanford, MIT, Caltech, UChicago, etc.), he/she will do better than in a lesser school. This principle is known as ceteris paribus; keep everything constant except what we're looking to vary - namely the prestige/reputation of the school. Do you disagree with the statement I made here?

GAclassof2008: No one will dispute that someone can be successful at a school other than an Ivy (or other top school). No one. But you would be ignorant to suggest that a student who is choosing between a top school and a lesser school should go to the lesser school (assuming the top school has a better program for the student's interests, finances aren't a problem, etc.)

after reading this thread, i have to say wow...GAclassof2008 you sound pretty offensive/rude
