If there are extenuating circumstances you know you can use the second essay thing? You shouldn't really heap mounds of praise on these super-elite schools. They know they're good, they're America's pipe dream, you aren't going to set yourself apart when you tell them how much you love them. Focus on pointing out what you'd bring to the school and the community. That really shouldn't take more than a paragraph and a half.

Just try to answer the question: why do you really want to go to Yale? What does Yale have for you that no other school on your list has. I thought it was difficult at first, but when you distill things down to their essence, it is not so hard to do. I wrote two sentences: one about my major choice and how Yale would satisfy it in a way other schools can't. Another about my love for the arts and Yale's obviously fantastic arts environment. It was actually a relief not to have to write a lengthy "Why Yale" essay - I was able to convey it in 295 characters.

?! = my thoughts exactly.

i wish i knew 300 characters weren't the same as 300 words before i wrote my 'why yale' essay.

I wrote about Yale's specific academic programs.
