WHY Yale Supplement Question!

Hi, I’m an International student from Hong Kong! I am planning to apply to Yale and was wondering whether anyone could give me feedback on my “Why Yale” supplement question.

I know i’m a bit over the word limit, but I’m struggling to make it shorter. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

There are two distinct reasons that are driving me to apply to Yale. Firstly, Yale is the perfect greenhouse to nurture my entrepreneurial spirit and offers knowledge from the symbiosis of the interdepartmental major in Computer Science and Economics .

This summer I started my own company. My aim is to tackle the billions of wastepaper generated from the production of business cards, and create an Eco-friendly, sustainable alternative to the exchange of contact information in person. With the help of Yale’s Office of Cooperative Research and Entrepreneurial Institute, I hope that I can further enrich myself and innovate new solutions for problems in our modern day world.

At the axis of Computer Science and Economics, it excites me how these two areas can come together to forge a better future for the next generation. I want to be a part of the plethora of people who are at this axis, driving change and innovation to better our society.

I’m not an expert but I think if you can substitute the name of a school or department with that of any other, it does not do a good job of answering the question. They want to know what it is about them that interests you more than any other school, what you feel they can offer you that another school can’t, and what you can contribute to the college community. You do an ok job of talking about yourself but you do not offer insight into why you think Yale is the best option for you.

@helpingmom40 brings up a perceptive point. Your essay is about why CS/Econ, not why Yale.

CS/Econ will represent about 14 of the 36 course minimum required to graduate from Yale.

You can study CS and econ (though maybe not as a joint major) at plenty of schools, many of those will also have entrepreneurial institutes. What is special about Yale?

What excites you about the other opportunities at Yale? What can you do at Yale that you can’t do anywhere else?
