Why you chose UCF over UF?

Most people believe that UF is the better of the two but that is not my view on the situation.

I like UCF more than UF because of the Information Technology program that UCF offers. Even though I applying to both, for backup, if I get accepted to both I will choose UCF.

So, why did you choose UCF over UF?

I'm currently at UCF.

I chose it because the campus and dorms are nicer, the people were way more friendly, and it's a really good school academically but people don't have a big head about it.

To me, UF is a waste of time unless you're in it for pre-med or football.

And now that UCF is opening a medical school and our football team is on the rise... well, I can't see much that UF has that UCF doesn't.

UCF is D's #1 choice because this is the only large university that offers a BS in Event Mangement. UCF is a perfect fit for her, with a a huge stadium to root for her favorite college sports team to all of the amenities that Orlando has to offer, especially in her field.

UCF has been perfect for my son, especially his involvement with the Honors College. In fact, I'd love to pick up and move the honors college to UF because of so many reasons. However, my D will most likely choose UF or GaTech because UCF doesn't have a chemical engineering degree, and that appears to be the way she's leaning. We're also getting frustrated with UCF this time around -- not a single issue with my son when he applied -- because there's been all kinds of trouble getting stuff related to her application. Transcripts have been sent twice (now we're on to hand delivering) and none of her standardized test scores are, apparently, arriving either. And admissions is terrible about not wanting to speak to me, even though my d's a minor still ... and that's been frustrating. She doesn't have the time right now or the accumen to being dealing with this.

Oh yeah, and I picked UCF because the honors college is better than UF's. I've had UF honors students tell me to not even bother applying to theirs if I had chosen to go to UF.

said there were problems with some electronic transcript submissions to UCF this year. When DS#3 FINALLY gets his essay done, and we request the transcripts, we'll also get a sealed hardcopy and send it certified.
This happened with FSU and DS#1 a few years back.

Yeah, we've been going back and forth with an admissions person. She told us the same thing. ACT gave us the tracking number from back in May which they said showed that UCF accessed my D's ACT scores. UCF agrees that they did access them, but they can't find them. So not only do we need to get hard copy transcripts, they also want us to have ACT send hard copy scores. This is becoming crazy!

In my opinon, UCF is a way better school. It's located in the middle of orlando and there are tons of internship and job opportunities. Gaineseville is a small town and the competition for those kinds of things can really suck. Orlando has so many other things to do, which is nice. You'll def. get bored on the weekends, so it's nice to have places to go and things to do. The dorms at UCF are so much nicer than the ones at UF. The crappiest ones at UCF are still better than the ones at UF. Also, UCF is an up and coming school, it can only get better and better. It's the perfect time to be a knight right now!

UCF has son's SAT scores! Yay! UCF hasn't gotten son's transcript. Boo. I sent a hardcopy out today. Hopefully they'll get it by early next week...

"In my opinon, UCF is a way better school"

WOW, this is funny! When UCF surpasses Florida State then let us know. UF & FSU are big name universities, whereas UCF has a tiny endowment, and lacks any sort of infastructure to be a major research university. UCF will be in serious trouble when Valencia Community College starts offering Bachelor degrees (they will have a better endowment per student ratio that this Tier 4 University).

Do I need to start arguing with you again over the use of Alumni lists SSobick? It seems that any time someone starts a discussion about UF you have to come in and declare UF superior to EVERYONE.

You should know that the UCF honors college has higher admissions statistics than UF also. UCF has been largely underestimated in the past, but that's slowly changing. In fact, last year we TOPPED FSU's enrollment statistics. (Not this year though because FSU cut the size of their freshman class, while UCF continued to grow theirs.)

Considering what's going on at UF right now with all their wasteful spending (heard of the Rec Center palm readers yet?) I'm glad UCF is placing academics on the top of their priority list. This can especially be seen with the fact that UCF did not cut any funding for the honors college despite the state's economic woes. President Hitt even has committed himself to never cutting the honors college's budget in the future.

"I'm glad UCF is placing academics on the top of their priority list"

Ha Ha if you consider having fancy dorms a top priority for academics then more power too you. Don't even get me started about how UCF can't compare in terms of their Graduate/Professional Programs.

Also you admit that UCF can't even beat out FSU in terms of the quality for their last incoming class. How can UCF even consider being on the same page as UF, when they are not even the 2nd best public in the state?

In terms of Alumni prestige: UCF has none and only places well in Orlando (whereas UF & FSU places well in the South, Mid Atlantic, and pockets throughout the USA). I understand the current UF & FSU alumi attended these respective institutions up to decades ago, however it does not change the fact that it is a bench mark to the quality of instruction in the past. The point is both of these institutions have amazing track records for churning members of society who have contributed greatly to business, politics, diplomacy, science, military, academics, etc...

And UF and FSU have had time to develop such reputations (as well as some negative ones...), where as UCF is a relatively up and coming school. Considering how we have just begun to make a name for ourselves, we're doing pretty well.

"Considering how we have just begun to make a name for ourselves, we're doing pretty well."

I agree and best of luck to UCF in the future. I am finished with this thread

"UCF will be in serious trouble when Valencia Community College starts offering Bachelor degrees (they will have a better endowment per student ratio that this Tier 4 University)."

Um, UCF is a third tier school (per US News and World Report).

Yeah, and if the recent growth is any indication, it could become a second tier school very soon. Possibly in two or three years.

For those of you wondering where these schools truly stand I offer the following from the USNWR Americas best colleges 2008 Rankings.

Schools are Sorted by “Peer Assessment” worth 25% of total USNWR score.

UF / Peer 3.6 / Nat U. #49
UMiami / Peer 3.2 / Nat U. #52
FSU / Peer 3.0 / Nat U #112

Then there’s the others:
USF / Peer 2.6 / 3rd tier
UCF / Peer 2.4 / 3rd tier
FIU / Peer 2.2 / 4th tier

With a “peer score” of 2.4 UCF, will be lucky to surpass USF.
Sorry but it takes a LONG time to raise the “Peer Score”

Granted “individual” departments could be strong in any individual school. It all comes down to fit.

Clarification: FSU is actually ranked 102nd overall. Now I'm truly done with this thread

Rankings for an undergrad degree are nonsense for the most part. Rankings matter for graduate or professional degrees, not undergraduate study.

I chose UCF because it is the best combination of everything. UCF's campus is easy to navigate, Orlando has everything, academics are solid but not incredibly difficult, dorms are far better than UF/FSU, new facilities, safer campus and football games are enjoyable to participate in BUT they dont completey DOMINATE the enitre campus/city. Some games are nice to watch/tailgate; other weekends I need to study, not watch football and I've never had a problem at UCF because of that. Also UCF does not focus enitrely on academics, a degree here combines experience/job skills and academics which prepares you better for the job market than pure academics do. Plus UCF is on the rise, things get better every year.

Sure UF/FSU might be ranked higher by US News in academics and football but UCF is the place to be for the best all around experience.
